HANOVER, N.H. — Junior forward Sarah Steinmann scored both goals for the Tigers as Auburn defeated the Big Green of Dartmouth 2-0 here Sunday afternoon at the adidas/Hypertherm Tournament improving to 5-1-1 on the year.
"This was a great victory for us," head coach Karen Hoppa said. "To come into a game with a quality Northeast team and get a win is always important. I have to give credit to the team coming in after a double overtime game and another scoreless half and getting two in the second is a tribute to them getting it done."
The first half was scoreless for both teams, but the Tigers applied most of the pressure out-shooting Dartmouth 4-1 and taking three corner kicks while the Big Green had none.
Four minutes into the second half, Dartmouth’s Lea Keifer hit the post, but the Tiger defense cleared the ball.
Just one minute later, Steinmann took a feed from Jac Schwarz down the right side. Dartmouth’s goalkeeper, Anne Marbarger, came out to make the save on Steinmann and the Marietta, Ga., native tipped the ball over Marbarger’s head into the goal for the 1-0 lead.
"Jac was really playing hard," Steinmann said. "She saw the play developing and made it happen. It was mainly her."
Steinmann took things into her own hands on the second goal of the game as she dribbled through two defenders and the goalkeeper into the center of the net with just 12:08 remaining in the contest.
"I was trying to be patient and I finally saw the shot and took it," said Steinmann. "We were really happy to get that one because Dartmouth really kept up the pressure in the last 10-11 minutes and we wanted that shutout."
Auburn returns home Friday and Sunday as the Tigers host Samford Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. and Rice Sept. 28 at 1 p.m. at the AU Soccer Complex. Admission is free.
