Frierson Named Top Player In The Country By TopDrawSoccer.com
Sept. 2, 2010
Junior midfielder Katy Frierson has been tabbed the top player in the country in the initial TopDrawerSoccer.com National Top 100 Women To Watch, the website revealed on Thursday. Frierson, from Homewood, leads Auburn with six points on the young season, scoring two goals (both game-winners) and collecting two assists as Auburn has started out the season 2-1-0. A First Team All-SEC selection as both a freshman and sophomore, she has been selected to the Preseason All-SEC team by the league's coaches and is on the Hermann Trophy Watch List, which honors the top collegiate player. Frierson, the only player in the top 20 on the list to play in the SEC, has registered 51 career points in just over two years of playing time, scoring 16 goals and assisting on 19, all of which already rank inside Auburn's career top 10 lists. Frierson was not the only Auburn player to be recognized in the top 100 as Heather Havron was listed at No. 83. A senior defender from Winter Park, Fla., she is second on the team in minutes played with 251, playing as an outside back. The Top 100 list comes out a day after the website ranked its Women's Top 20 by conference, in which the SEC was broken down into Eastern and Western Divisions. Of the top 20 players in the West, five of them come off of the Auburn roster as Frierson is the top player, Havron is fourth, fellow defenders Sammy Towne and Julie King are fifth and sixth, respectively, and forward Ashley Marks is 15th.
Auburn resumes action this weekend when it plays host to No. 5 Florida State on Friday at 7 pm on Cram The Complex Night. The first 250 fans into the match will receive a free Auburn ball cap. On Sunday the team squares off with Western Carolina at 2 pm. Admission to both matches is free. |
