Chrissy Culver Named SEC Offensive Player of the Week
August 31, 2004
AUBURN - Auburn forward Chrissy Culver has been named the SEC Soccer Offensive Player of the Week by the conference office Tuesday for her three goals and an assist in wins over Furman and UAB last weekend.
"Chrissy had an outstanding weekend for us," head coach Karen Hoppa said. "We got the strong start we needed, with two big games to start the season and Chrissy was our anchor up front in those wins."
Culver, a Marietta, Ga., native started both games and totaled seven points on the weekend. Her three goals came off seven shots, with one of those goals recorded as the game-winner against UAB, who is regionally ranked.
"I scored my goals this weekend because the team put the balls right at my feel," Culver said. "Sarah Steinmann put together some great goals herself this weekend and sent me some great balls, which really helped me. Our game Friday night, we started out slow, but by the end of this game, we had gotten in our flow and played well together. Our offensive attack is much better this year than it has ever been."
In the 3-1 win over UAB on Sunday, Culver had a hand in all three goals scored as she scored the second and third goals, and assisted on Sarah Steinmann's goal. With that win over the Blazers, seniors Culver, Megan Rivera, Steinmann and Jenn Walters are undefeated against UAB in their four-year careers at Auburn.
Tennessee's Keeley Dowling was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week.
No. 23-ranked Auburn will take on another Birmingham school on Thursday as the Tigers travel to Samford for a 7 p.m. match.
