The Auburn soccer team is on the fields of the Orange Beach Soccer Complex this week, going through its' annual preseason two-a-day practice schedule in preparation for the 2009 season, which starts on Sunday, Aug. 23, at 6pm at Samford.

Auburn, which claimed a share of the SEC West championship last season, it's sixth under head coach Karen Hoppa, returns six of the top eight point scorers off of last year's squad, including 2008 SEC Freshman of the Year and First Team All-SEC selection Katy Frierson in the midfield.

The 2008 season was undoubtedly a successful one for Hoppa and the Tigers as the team recorded the most points (135) and goals (41) since the 2002 team won the league title while also going 7-3-1 in SEC play, the most league wins for Auburn since going 9-0-2 in 2004.

"Our goals for the 2009 season are big once again. We want to achieve some things that we haven't done before at Auburn, the first of which is qualifying for the Sweet 16. That's our season-long goal and that's going to be our focus," Hoppa said. "We want to compete for a SEC Championship again and we want to defend the SEC West Championship. Our goals year-in-and-year-out always start right there." The 2009 squad will be a very veteran club offensively but will be breaking in a new goalkeeper after the graduation and subsequent drafting of First Team All-SEC selection Allison Whitworth. The candidates to replace her between the posts are freshmen Amy Howard and Caitlin Torie, who are both vying for the job during the week down in Orange Beach.

The team went through some off field work last week after arriving on campus on Wednesday. After the physicals were taken and the equipment was issued, the team gathered for their individual and team photos on Thursday before stepping onto the field for the first time as the 2009 Auburn Tigers at 6:30pm on Friday.

Two-a-days continued on Saturday and Sunday before the team bused down to Orange Beach on Monday. Practicing on the same fields as where the 2009 SEC Tournament will be held, the team will also enjoy some team-bonding experiences while staying in beach-side condos.

Auburntigers.com will again be `Road Trippin' With The Tigers' this season. The first installment will come on Friday when Jenni Prescott sends a report in after going through her final week of preseason training.
