With seven straight NCAA Tournament berths and two consecutive SEC Tournament Championship Game appearances currently on her resume, Auburn Head Soccer Coach Karen Hoppa has received a five-year extension to her contract, keeping her at Auburn through the 2017 season.
"I am very grateful to (Athletics Director) Jay Jacobs, (Senior Women's Administrator) Meredith Jenkins and Auburn University for extending my contract," Hoppa said. "While we take great pride in what we have accomplished here during my tenure, we know there is more work to do and I will work tirelessly to take this program to the next level. I am blessed to work at such a wonderful institution, and I look forward to the next five years! War Eagle!"
"Karen and the soccer program have always been great representatives of Auburn athletically, academically and in the community, and we are appreciative of her hard work and dedication. We look forward to continued success from Karen and team in the years to come," Auburn Athletics Director Jay Jacobs said.
Hoppa came to Auburn prior to the 1999 season and has guided the program to a 164-111-24 (.587) mark during her 14 seasons. She is also now 228-155-33 (.588) in 20 years as a Division I head coach and is currently 35th among the winningest active coaches by victories.
Hoppa's teams have continued to be one of the top programs in the league, winning the SEC Western Division seven times and advancing to the NCAA Tournament 11 out of her 14 years at the helm. Auburn has also advanced to the SEC Tournament 12 consecutive times, the third-longest active streak in the conference.
Off the field Hoppa's teams are just as successful as it was recently awarded a NSCAA Team Academic Award for the ninth straight season for the team's 3.12 cumulative GPA. It also placed 12 student-athletes on the 2012 Fall SEC Academic Honor Roll. Through the years she has seen a trio of players earn CoSIDA Academic All-America recognition in Katy Frierson (2011), Jenn Johnson (2007 & 2008) and Erin Hinson (2003) while Frierson was named the NSCAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2010.
Hoppa is the dean of the SEC West and has the second-highest win total at a single SEC school by any current coach in the league. Since the start of the 2001 season, two years after her arrival at Auburn, she has guided the program to 12 10-win seasons and an astounding 46-15-4 (.738) mark against SEC West teams.
Auburn finished the 2012 season with a 13-11-1, 7-6-0 SEC mark and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round.
