The Auburn soccer team defeated UAB, 6-0, in an exhibition match on Sunday in Birmingham. Ana Cate netted two goals and an assist in the win, scoring in both the first and third 30-minute periods.
Cate, who finished the 2010 season with four goals and an assist in 13 matches, scored at the 11:30 mark of the first period when she headed in a Heather Havron corner kick. She then scored again just over a minute into the third period as she took a cross from Lydia Townsend and slotted the ball in with her left foot into the lower left corner for a 3-0 lead.
Katy Frierson had opened the scoring just over two minutes into the first period when she picked up a loose ball in the midfield and chipped the UAB keeper from 24 yards out into the top right corner.
Tasha Prentice gave Auburn a 4-0 lead as she finished off a Cate-Frierson combination through the midfield.
Mary Coffed then made it 5-0 when Frierson crossed her a pass that she buried into the lower right corner.
Tori Ball capped off the scoring with assists by Townsend and Jessica Wolfe.
Auburn will play its next exhibition match at 6pm on Saturday when it faces West Florida at the Auburn Soccer Complex.
