AUBURN, Ala. - Kristin Stewart scored just over seven minutes into the game and the Tigers kept going from there as the No. 20 Auburn soccer team defeated Samford, 3-1, on Friday night at the Auburn Soccer Complex. The win closed out the non-conference season for the Tigers, who are 6-1-0 entering next weekend's conference opener.

"We knew this was going to be a real tough game. We knew Samford was going to be organized and we knew they were going to come out and play hard and we had to come out and match that intensity," AU Head Coach Karen Hoppa said. "I am so proud of the way our starters started the game and the way our seniors led that charge, because we started this game flying and ready to play, putting pressure on them early and often."

Stewart took a nice feed from Kara Kasten that split a trio of Samford defenders and the senior from Lilburn, Ga., did the rest from there, drawing Bulldog goalkeeper Cayley Winters off her line and firing a shot past her from 8-yards out that rippled the net for Stewart's second goal of the year, making it 1-0 AU.

The score remained 1-0 Tigers through halftime before Jac Schwarz netted her first goal of the season just over seven minutes into the second half. Jenn Johnson was the catalyst on the scoring play as she took a pass from Kara Kasten and raced down the near sideline before firing a perfect pass to Schwarz waiting on the far side of the 6-yard box. Schwarz then finished it off with the fifth game-winning goal of her career to make it 2-0 Tigers.

The Tigers seemed to put the game away when freshman Jenni Prescott scored the first goal of her career in the 77th-minute of play. After SU's Winters punched the ball out from just off her line, Amanda Garcia put her head on the ball and dropped it off for Prescott, who wound up and fired a shot over Winters from the top of the 18-yard box.

Samford (5-2-0) broke up Auburn's shutout bid in the 81st minute when Valerie Kikkert scored her first goal of the season.

Allison Whitworth made four saves in net for the Tigers.

Auburn will open up the SEC portion of its season on Friday, Sept. 22, when it plays host to No. 18 Florida at 7 p.m. CT.
