AUBURN, Ala. -- Kristen Stewart's goal at the 22:29 mark of the first half was the only goal that Auburn needed to secure its first victory of the 2005 soccer season as the Tigers defeated Rhode Island, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Auburn/Reebok Classic at the AU Soccer Complex.

Ashley Eason had two assists for the Tigers, who got goals from Stewart, Leah Blayney and Amanda Garcia, as AU moved to 1-3-0 on the young season.

"The girls did a nice job of playing today," AU Head Coach Karen Hoppa said. "It was nice to put a three-spot up on the board and beat a good Rhode Island team."

Stewart got Auburn on the board early as Eason sent the ball up the right side of the field from 10-yards behind the midfield line to Kara Kasten, who dribbled up to the box before passing off to Stewart at the top of the box on the left hand side. Stewart then dribbled around the URI defender before firing a shot past Rams goalkeeper Ria Carroll's right for her first goal of the season and a 1-0 Tiger lead.

"Coach has been telling us to get the backs involved and Ashley did a good job of sending the ball ahead for us," Stewart said.

The game remained 1-0 Tigers until the 51:17 mark when Eason found Blayney in a two-on-one in front of the URI net. Blayney faked Carroll and then fired a shot past her for her second goal of the season.

Garcia cemented the victory with her first goal of the season off of a Jessie Allan pass from left of the Rams net at the 63:58 mark.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Tigers. Rhode Island fell to 0-4-0.

Cal State Fullerton went undefeated at the classic as they handed South Carolina its first loss of the year, 1-0, in Sunday's first game. Marlene Sandoval scored the lone goal of the game off of a penalty kick at the 8:03 mark of the game.

Auburn will hit the road for its next two games, traveling to New Mexico for the UNM Classic. The Tigers will play host New Mexicon on Friday at 7 p.m. MT before facing Arizona State on Sunday at 11 a.m. MT.
