AUSTIN, Texas - Despite out-shooting the Longhorns 20-to-17, the Auburn soccer team could not pull out a victory as Texas defeated the Tigers 2-0 Sunday night at Myers Stadium in Auburn's first nationally-televised game, live on ESPNU.
"I felt good about the way we played," Auburn head coach Karen Hoppa said. "We worked hard but just didn't get the results. Texas had good goals on solid shots, but now we need to find a way to get those shots to go in."
Texas didn't waste any time as a corner kick set up the first goal just 3:07 into the game. Erin Davis took the corner, which Carrie Schmit tapped to Kasey Moore for the score, past AU goalkeeper Anna Fiser.
At the conclusion of the half, shots were in favor of Texas 9-to-8 and the Longhorns took four corner kicks to Auburn's one.
In the second half, Auburn came out quick with a chance by Sara Power that was knocked out by two Texas defenders inside the goal. Senior forward Courtney Crandell also had an opportunity that hit the post later in the half.
Another corner kick by Texas with 34:45 remaining in the game, put the Longhorns up 2-0 for good. Davis again took the corner and Schmit one-timed a header into the goal, this time past AU freshman goalkeeper Allison Whitworth.
The Tigers ended the game with 20 shots, seven on goal, and had four corner kicks in the match, to Texas' six.
