Auburn Tops Columbus State, 4-0, In Spring Exhibition
March 26, 2012
The Auburn women's soccer team defeated Columbus State 4-0, on Saturday, March 24, at the Auburn Soccer Complex. The team is now 3-0 in spring exhibition games, and will begin preparation for Florida State on April 7. Just 45 seconds into the game Chelsea Gandy-Cromer knocked in Auburn's first goal of the game. She finished off a dangerous Tess Patton corner that took a deflection from Bianca Sierra. The corner kick was earned off of Auburn's kick-off play in which Mary Coffed beat her defender and earned the corner that resulted in the goal. Playing with confidence from the early goal, Tatiana Coleman scored Auburn's second goal at the 36:37 mark in the first half. The opposing team's goal kick was challenged and won in the air by Ana Cate, putting Coleman in on goal. Coleman then out-smarted the defender, anticipating the defender's back pass to the keeper and ripping off the ball to finish on an open goal. Columbus State was awarded a penalty-kick two minutes later, but the shooter missed wide left. Auburn responded scoring their third goal of the afternoon of another well-executed set play. Sierra served a long ball into the box from the other side of midfield. Coleman got a touch on the ball as it favorably fell to the feet of Tori Ball. Ball made no mistake, releasing a rocket into the upper right corner. Auburn carried this 3-0 lead into the half. Auburn started the second half much like the first, knocking in the fourth goal of the game at the 53 minute mark. This final goal, scored by Gandy-Cromer, her second of the day, was the result of great buildup play from Cate and Coffed. Cate won yet another Columbus State goal kick directing her header to Coffed. Coffed then beat her player 1v1 serving in a taunting cross from the end line to Gandy-Cromer, who finished first time.
Julie King, stepping in for the injured Amy Howard, made a diving save to her left in the waning moments to preserve the shut-out. Auburn will next face Florida State, a 2011 Final Four participant, in Tallahassee on April 7 at 1 pm. |
