Auburn gymnastics has been tabbed as the preseason No. 15 squad in the nation according to GymInfo the website announced over the weekend.
"We're excited that the preseason ranking are up because that means that fall practice is almost over and the season is about to start," head gymnastics coach Jeff Thompson said. "Being ranked 15th is a nice reflection of what we have done over the past several years. The other coaches respect what we've done and know that we're going to have a good team this year."
Georgia is the nation's top-ranked preseason team, followed by Utah, Florida, UCLA and Stanford to round out the top five. All seven of the Southeastern Conference teams appear throughout the top 25, with Alabama and LSU in the top 10 at sixth and seventh, respectively. Arkansas is 13th and Kentucky finishes out the poll at No. 25.
The Tigers have appeared in the preseason poll for six consecutive seasons. This season's spot at No. 15 is the highest since 2006 when Auburn entered the season at No. 15.
Auburn opens the 2009 season on the road at Illinois-Chicago on Jan. 4. The first meet in Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum will be against Alabama on Jan. 9.
