AUBURN, Ala. - The Auburn gymnastics team had the first of three intra-squad meets Friday afternoon in the team's training center, the McWhorter Center. The meet served as the first time this season that the Auburn gymnasts scored by a judge.
"Today was a good indication for the coaches and the athletes to see exactly where they are at this point in training," said associate head coach Rachelle Thompson. "We are about 10 weeks out from our first meet and having a judge come in will give the ladies an idea of what still needs to be accomplished and how to handle the pressure of being scored."
Auburn's top-eight gymnasts in each event competed in meet. Seven will compete in the November meet and six in the December meet leading up to the team's first regular-season competition on Jan. 8 as the Tigers host Alabama.
The vault and floor exercise performances were the highlight of the initial intra-squad, as the Tigers hit all nine vaults and all eight floor routines. The perfect vault performance was followed up by Auburn hitting seven-of-nine bar routines and six-of-eight on the balance beam. The afternoon was finished off by eight solid performances on the floor exercise.
"We're really excited. We just now need to focus on the little things after such a good day today. The big picture looks really good, and it was great to be judged by an official," said head coach Jeff Thompson of the team and individual performances.
"It was nice for the kids to see each other compete, and it shows the girls that aren't in the line-up what they need to do to get into the line-up. Overall, I couldn't be more pleased with today."
Prior to Saturday's football game vs. Ole Miss, Auburn gymnastics fans will have a special opportunity to meet the Auburn gymnastics team. The squad will be handing out team posters as well as signing autographs at the Coca-Cola Fan Fest tent on the Beard-Eaves Coliseum lawn from 10-10:35 a.m.
