LOS ANGELES – Auburn gymnasts Caitlin Atkinson and Bri Guy will compete as individuals in the 2013 NCAA Gymnastics Championship on Friday at 8 p.m. CT in Los Angeles in Pauley Pavilion on the campus of UCLA.
“I’m excited that these guys get to experience the national meet,” Auburn gymnastics head coach Jeff Graba said.. “We are trying to go in and show off what we’ve been doing all year. Bri and Caitlin are excited and ready to compete. I’m glad they are getting this experience, so that when we come back next year as a team, they will be able to share that with their teammates.”
Guy totaled 39.400 in the all-around competition at the Gainesville regional, while Atkinson scored an all-around 39.275 to advance.
The two gymnasts qualifying marks the first time since 2005 and only the third time in program history that the Tigers have sent two all-arounders two the national championship meet. Most recently, All-Americans Julie Dwyer and Courtney Puckett made the trip to the meet, also held in Los Angeles.
Both Auburn gymnasts will compete in the evening session on Friday scheduled for 8 p.m. CT. Atkinson will rotate with Utah, which starts on bye, while Guy will begin on floor exercise and rotate with Oklahoma.
Last season, Guy finished with a total of 37.800 with a pair of falls in her first career NCAA Championship meet. This will be the first trip for the freshman Atkinson.
Guy’s reached her season high in the all-around of 39.475 twice in 2013. Atkinson’s high total was a 39.550 scored in Auburn’s record win over LSU.
The top four finishers from both sessions including ties in each event and the all-around competition advance to Sunday’s event final.
