BIRMINGHAM – Auburn freshman gymnast Caitlin Atkinson has been named the SEC Gymnast of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
Atkinson helped Auburn score a program record 197.175 in its win over LSU. She took home the all-around title with a season-high total of 39.550, the third highest total in Auburn history, and equaled her career high on bars with a 9.90.
The native of Houston, Texas, also recorded a 9.9 on vault and saved her best performance for last and in the most critical time for Auburn. With the Tigers trailing entering the fourth rotation, Atkinson posted her career high on floor with a 9.925 to lead Auburn to its highest event score of the season, a 49.450 on the apparatus.
The honor is the second SEC award for Atkinson in 2013. She was named SEC Freshman of the Week on February 5 for her efforts on the road at Missouri. She is the first Auburn gymnast to be selected as SEC Gymnast of the Week since Allyson Sandusky in 2010.
Atkinson and the rest of the 11th-ranked Tigers are in action next on Friday against No. 23 Maryland for the annual Flip for the Cure Pink meet. The first 2,000 fans in Auburn Arena will receive pink shakers. The meet is scheduled for 7 p.m.
