For the first time in school history, the 20th ranked Auburn gymnastics team will begin its 2007 campaign on Friday, Jan. 5 at 7:30 p.m., at the Cancun Classic in Cancun, Mexico. The meet will be held at the Hilton Cancun Golf & Beach Resort and will feature two Big 12 teams, No. 13 Iowa State and No. 18 Missouri, as well as BYU.
The Tigers open their 2007 season coming off a third-place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional and qualified two individuals for the NCAA Championships. Two-time All-American Julie Dwyer returns for her junior season after being named SEC Gymnast of the Year in 2006. AU features 12 returning letterwinners in all off of last year's squad.
Three of the four participants in the Cancun Classic are ranked in the GymInfo top-20 (BYU is receiving votes) and all four teams earned berths in the NCAA Regionals last season.
BYU ended last season ranked No. 30 in the country after a sixth place finish at the North Central Regional. The Cougars return eight letterwinners and welcome nine newcomers to this year's squad. AU is 1-4 all-time against BYU.
Iowa State will have a familiar face leading the way this season, as former Auburn assistant Jay Ronayne takes over the reigns of the Cyclone program. Ronayne spent four seasons with the Tigers before being named the ISU head coach in July. The Cyclones have seven newcomers and return five letterwinners to a team that won the Big 12 title, made its first ever Super Six appearance and finished the season ranked sixth in 2006. The Tigers are 2-7 all-time against the Cyclones.
Missouri ended the 2006 season with a No. 14 ranking nationally after placing third at the Southeast Regional. The Tigers return 10 letterwinners and welcome six newcomers to a team that placed fourth in the Big 12 last year. AU is 15-6 all-time against MU.
