AUBURN - Auburn senior Maria Martinez was named the Golfweek Player of the Week Monday for her performance in claiming the individual title at the Derby Invitational Nov. 4-6 in Auburn.
Martinez carded a three-day total of 69-72-68--209 for a 7-under. The Maracaibo, Venezuela, native led the rest of the pack by nine strokes for a new 54-hole record in the tournament. Martinez hit all 18 greens in the final round as she helped lead the Tigers to a team victory as well at The Derby.
"This is a great honor for Maria," Auburn head coach Kim Evans said. "She has really turned into the leader of this team and that performance inspired them all down the stretch."
The sixth-ranked Tigers defeated No. 1 Duke by one stroke, coming back from 10 down in the final round for the victory. The Duke loss is the first for the Blue Devils in a fall tournament since 2002 at the Derby Invitational.
The Derby Invitational is the final fall tournament for the Tigers. Auburn resumes play Feb. 20 at the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz.
