AUBURN, Ala. - The Auburn women's golf team will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. this week to play in the Tar Heel Invitational. The tournament is the third of four fall tournaments for the Tigers.
Hosted by the North Carolina, the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational is a 54-hole tournament played at the UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C. The par 72 course will play at 6,285 yards for the tournament. The event features 18 teams from around the country, including 12 teams ranked in the top 25 in the nation.
"We are looking forward to getting back out on the course this week at the Tar Heel Invitational," said Auburn associate head coach Andrew Pratt. "Every team here this week is either ranked or receiving votes in the poll, so it should be a great challenge for us. We've had some good practices, great qualifying and everyone is excited to get out and compete this week."
Auburn has had a three week break since its last tournament. Playing in one of the toughest fields of the season, the Tigers took seventh place at the Mason Rudolph Championship. It came just two weeks after Auburn opened the season with an eighth-place showing at the Cougar Classic.
Auburn's lineup this week will feature senior Marta Sanz, junior Victoria Trapani, senior Diana Fernandez, sophomore Jamie Yun and freshman Clara Baena. Trapani leads the Tigers on the season with a 72.33 stroke average. Not far behind her, though, is Sanz with a 72.67 average. She is also coming off a tie for fifth at the Mason Rudolph.
Auburn played in the Tar Heel Invitational last season, taking 14th in the 18-team tournament. Trapani led the Tigers with a tie for 15th, carding a 5-over 221. Sanz tied for 55th while Fernandez tied for 89th.
Joining Auburn at the tournament this week are No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Oklahoma, No. 4 Duke, No. 5 Florida, No. 8 Arkansas, No. 11 Clemson, No. 14 North Carolina State, No. 15 North Carolina, No. 16 Virginia, No. 19 Vanderbilt, No. 20 Michigan State, No. 24 South Carolina, Baylor, LSU, Ole Miss, Notre Dame and Wake Forest.
Play is set to begin with tee times from the Nos. 1 and 10 tees at 8:09 a.m. CT, Friday. Auburn will play with LSU and Oklahoma, going off No. 1 from 8:54 - 9:30 a.m. Fans can follow along with live stats at www.BirdieFire.com.
