AUBURN, Ala. - Former Tiger Margaret Shirley took runner-up honors Thursday at the 2013 United States Women's Mid-Amateur. The tournament took place at the Biltmore Forest Country Club in Asheville, N.C.

Shirley, a native of Roswell, Ga., lost to Julie Potter in 19 holes in the championship match. She played at Auburn from 2004-08 and was assistant coach for the Tigers from 2011-13.

Carding a 7-over 149 in stroke play qualifying, Shirley was the No. 3 seed in match play. She defeated Suzanne Stanley 5 and 3 in the first round before taking down Tara Fleming 4 and 3 in the second. Shirley downed Debbie Adams in 19 holes in the third round and Andrea Kraus 5 and 4 in the quarterfinals.

Shirley took a 19-hole win over No. 2 seed Meghan Stasi to earn a spot in the championship match. In the final, Shirley was 2-up after seven holes, but bogeys on Nos. 8 and 11 evened the match. Shirley was up a hole after 16 holes, but a bogey on No. 17 squared it heading into No. 18. Both players carded pars on No. 18, but Potter was able to pull out the win on No. 1, the 19th hole of the match, for the victory.
