Former Auburn three-time All-American Danielle Downey opened the first-ever Navistar LPGA Classic firing 4-under 68 and is tied for fifth. Downey will return to action on Friday from RTJ Golf Trail at Capitol Hill in Prattville, Ala., at 12:30 p.m.
Starting from the back nine, Downey opened with a birdie and stayed at 1-under 71 after shooting even par on 11 through 18. After back-to-back birdies on one and two, Downey found herself at 3-under 69. Downey bogeyed three, her only one of the day, and went even par on the next two holes.
Downey concluded the day with a birdie on nine to finish at 4-under for the day. Downey is tied for fifth with Nancy Scranton. Stacy Prammanasudh leads the 144-person field after shooting 9-under 63 and is followed by Lorena Ochoa in second. Lindsey Wright and Virada Nirapathpongporn are tied for third.
Also competing at the tournament was former All-American Celeste Troche. Troche shot an 8-over 80 and is tied for 138th.
Downey will return to action with Angela Jerman and Meredith Duncan at 12:30 p.m. off of the first hole, while Troche will tee off of hole 10 with Yu Ping Lin and Marcy Hart at 7:40 a.m.
