AUBURN, Ala. – The 24th-ranked Auburn women’s golf team begins postseason play Friday at the 2014 SEC Championship held at the Founders Course at Greystone Golf & Country Club in Birmingham,.
The Tigers enter the tournament winners of three out of the last five SEC titles, including back-to-back championships in 2011 and 2012. This marks the second straight year that the conference championship has been held at par-72, 6,050-yard Founders Course.
“We’re getting better, with Victoria Trapani back in the lineup we’ve continued to play better,” Auburn head coach Kim Evans said. “Everybody is working really hard. This is a hard-working team. We played really well in Athens and felt like we’ve got a lot more room to grow.”
Auburn took 10th a year ago at the 2013 SEC Championships, finishing 10th overall at 69-over 933. A slow start by the Tigers in the first round, ended Auburn’s chances for a third straight SEC title last season.
Victoria Trapani has provided Auburn with a boost in their lineup since her return at the Darius Rucker Invitaitonal in March. The junior finished tied for sixth at last year’s tournament individually, leading the Tigers with an 11-over 227. Trapani gave Auburn their sixth straight top-10 finish by individual with her performance.
“The last couple of tournaments we’ve got progressively better,” Trapani said. “We’ve been putting in a lot more time in her short game. We’re excited to play in Birmingham. I think we’re prepared, so hopefully we can perform this weekend. We’ve been working really hard and we need to play our best from start to finish.”
The tournament features all 14 SEC teams, with nine entering the postseason ranked among the nation’s top-25. The Tigers will compete against No. 5 Arkansas, No. 10 South Carolina, No. 11 Alabama, No. 14 Vanderbilt, No. 16 LSU, No. 19 Florida, No. 22 Kentucky and No. 23 Mississippi State. The tournament also features four individuals ranked in the top-25 by GolfWeek.
Auburn’s lineup will consist of seniors Diana Fernandez and Marta Sanz, junior Victoria Trapani, sophomore Alex Harrell and freshman Clara Baena. That lineup provided the Tigers with a fifth-place finish at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in the team’s final regular season tournament, April 4-6.
The three-day tournament runs April 18-20 and admission is free. Auburn is scheduled to tee off from 8-8:40 a.m. starting on No. 1.
