CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Auburn women's golf team Day 1 of the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational in third after carding a 3-over-par 291. The Tigers ended the day with two players in the top 20 of the 96-player field.
Hosted by the North Carolina, the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational is a 54-hole tournament being played at the UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C. The par 72 course is playing at 6,285 yards for the tournament. The event features 18 teams from around the country, including 12 teams ranked in the top 25 in the nation.
"It was a good first day, especially on such a challenging course against a difficult field," said associate head coach Andrew Pratt. "We actually gave up a few strokes on the last couple holes and that is something we can't do. We have to be able to finish better, but fortunately there is a lot of golf left to play and more opportunities for us to improve."
Senior Diana Fernandez ended the day tied for 10th, after shooting a 1-under 71 with two birdies on the day. With 15 pars on the day, Fernandez was headed for a bogey-free round, but she was stung with her lone one of the day on No. 18.
Sophomore Jamie Yun carded the best round of her collegiate career, coming in at even-par 72 to tie for 16th. Yun carded a team-high four birdies on the day. Just one stroke behind her was Marta Sanz who shot a 1-over 73 to finish the day tied for 22nd.
Junior Victoria Trapani shot a 3-over 75 with two birdies in the first round, finishing the first day tied for 42nd. Freshman Clara Baena rounded out the Auburn lineup with an 11-over-par 83, coming in tied for 94th.
Vanderbilt finished round one in first place with a 3-under-par 285. Duke followed in second place with a 2-under 286. Auburn took third place, after shooting a 3-over 291. Mississippi and Oklahoma are tied for fourth at 4-over 292.
Individually, Antonia Scherer of Vanderbilt finished in first place with a 5-under-par 67. Ashlan Ramsey of Clemson shot a 4-under 68, holding on to second place while Duke's Laetitia Beck and Ole Miss' Alison Hovatter are tied for third after rounds of 3-under 69. There is a five-way tie for fifth place at an even-par 72.
Action at the Tar Heel Invitational will continue at 8:09 a.m. CT, Saturday with rounds of the Nos. 1 and 10 tees. Auburn will go off No. 1 starting at 9:39 a.m. CT, playing alongside Vanderbilt and Duke.
