WEST POINT, Miss. – Senior Kelli Murphy bounced back with an even-par 72 Monday to lead the Auburn women’s golf team in the second round of the Magnolia Invitational.
The Tigers are in fifth place after two rounds at 585 (+9); Auburn shot 294 (+6) in Monday’s second round. Auburn is two shots back of Mississippi State for fourth place and five behind Memphis for third.
Murphy improved by eight shots over her first-round performance, climbing the leaderboard from a tie for 52nd to a tie for 39th. She recorded three birdies on the day and played her final seven holes at 2-under with back-to-back birdies at 13 and 14.
Freshman Kaleigh Telfer carded a 73 (+1) in her second collegiate round to move up to a tie for 21st place. She had five birdies on the day, including three straight on the back nine to get to 1-under, but a double bogey at the 18th moved her back over par.
Senior Michaela Owen remained in the top 10 with a round of 74 (+2) Monday; she is even-par through two rounds and in a seven-way tie for sixth place. Sophomore Kayley Marschke and junior Melanie Talbott posted rounds of 75 (+3), and sophomore Elena Hualde finished with a 76 (+4).
Ole Miss continues to lead the tournament at 9-under-par, 12 shots ahead of second-place Tennessee. The Rebels’ Julia Johnson moved into the individual lead at 7-under, two shots ahead of LSU’s Kathleen Gallagher.
Tuesday’s final round gets underway with an 8 a.m. CT shotgun start. Auburn will be paired with Mississippi State and Southern Miss. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
