HANAHAN, S.C. - The Auburn women's golf team finished its first day at the Cougar Classic tied for ninth with LSU after shooting a 7-over-par 295. Junior Victoria Trapaniled the Tigers in the opening round, carding a 1-under 71.

"Overall, we did not play our best golf today," said Auburn associate head coach Andrew Pratt. "Victoria played solid today at 1-under and Marta hung in there as well. We will have to be a lot more committed to each and every shot and play the par-5s better tomorrow.
"If we can do that, then we can get right back in this tournament. We need everyone to come out tomorrow with an expectation of shooting under par, no matter how you hit it."
Hosted by the College of Charleston, the Cougar Classic is a 54-hole tournament being played at the Yeamans Hall Club in Hanahan, S.C. The par 72 course plays at 6,204 yards for the tournament. The tournament features 20 teams from around the country, including eight Southeastern Conference teams.
Leading the Tigers in the first round, Trapani shot a 1-under 71 with two birdies and a bogey. She ended the day tied for 10th. Senior Marta Sanzfinished the day just two strokes behind her, finishing the day tied for 26th with a 1-over 73.
Sophomore Alex Harrell, who is making her third career start in the Tigers' lineup, shot a 3-over 75 to finish the day tied for 47th. Freshman Clara Baena, making her first appearance at Auburn, is tied for 61st with a 4-over 76. Senior Diana Fernandezrounded out the Auburn lineup tied for 98th with a 9-over 81.
Mississippi State ended the day in first place with 6-under 282. Southern California and Clemson followed, tied for second with 3-under 285s. North Carolina State and Wake Forest tied for fourth with 1-under 287, while host College of Charleston and Baylor carded 1-over 289s, tying for sixth.
Individually, MSU's Ally McDonald and North Carolina State's Brittany Marchand are tied for the lead with 6-under 66s. Wake Forest's Marissa Dodd is third with a 68 while five players are tied for fourth with 3-under 69s.
Live scoring for the Cougar Classic can be found online via www.golfstat.com. Auburn will start the day at 9:15 a.m. CT, off No. 1, playing alongside Tennessee and Florida.
