CHARLESTON, S.C. - The No. 6/7 Auburn women's golf team ended its first day of play at the Cougar Classic in sixth after shooting an even-par 288. Junior Marta Sanz is tied for first place for the tournament after carding a five-under 67.

"We had a good first day, it is always interesting to get out and see what happens in your first tournament of the year," said Auburn head coach Kim Evans. "Our top three did really well today and we got a great round out of Marta Sanz. Diana and Nicole got a feel for what it is like out here and we are looking for more out of them."

Hosted by the College of Charleston, the Cougar Classis is a 54-hole tournament played at the Yeamans Hall Club in Hanahan, S.C. The par 72 course is playing at 6,219 yards for the tournament. The tournament also feature 24 teams, 13 of which are ranked in the top 25.

Sanz shot a 5-under 67 after carding six birdies and a bogey. She finished the day tied for the lead with Florida's Isabelle Lendl.

"I was really proud of Marta, she had a great day today," said Evans. "She was really steady and made some nice shots. Let's hope she can keep it going through the rest of the tournament."

Senior Carlie Yadloczky ended the day tied for 14th with a 1-under 71, and sophomore Victoria Trapani followed with a 1-over 73, tied for 33rd. Junior Diana Fernandez is tied for 88th with a 5-over 77 while sophomore Nicole Quinn finished the round tied for 118th with an 8-over 80.

Southern California is in first at 3-under 285, followed by Duke, Virginia and Florida tied for second at 2-under 286. Georgia is in fifth at 1-under 287 with the Tigers in sixth at 288.

Sanz and Lendl are tied for the lead with 5-under 67s. Right behind them is a five-way tie for third place held by UNCG's Fanny Cnops, Duke's Lindy Duncan, Vanderbilt's Irina Gabasa, Florida's Camilla Hedberg and Virginia's Portland Rosen at 3-under 69.

Play will continue at 6:50 a.m. CT with tee times off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees. Auburn will play in the second wave, going off No. 1 from 10:50 - 11:26 a.m. CT, playing alongside Tennessee and South Carolina.
