ATHENS, Ga. - The Auburn women's golf team carded a 17-over 305 Tuesday in the first round of the NCAA Women's Golf Championship, finishing the day in 24th. Junior Diana Fernandez led the Tigers on the day with an even-par 72.

Hosted by Georgia, the NCAA Championship is a 72-hole stroke play championship will take place at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga. The par-72 course will play at 6,372 yards for the tournament. The tournament field is made up of 24 teams, eight advancing from each regional site, and six individuals for a 126-player field.

"We had a tough day today and missed some key putts," said Auburn student assistant Danielle Downey. "I thought the girls played well at times, but those three-putts will kill you and they got us today.

"We got the first round out of the way, though. We know what it takes on this course, we've done it before, we just have to re-group tonight and come out here tomorrow ready to play."

Fernandez, a native of Asuncion, Paraguay, was bogey-free and 2-under through 14 holes, but two bogeys in the final four dropped her to a tie for 20th at even-par. Fernandez has now had the low round for the Tigers in four of Auburn's last five competitive rounds.

After a rough start to the day that included a double-bogey on her second hole, senior Carlie Yadloczky rebounded to finish out the day even par, carding a 2-over 74 in the first round. She finished the day tied for 46th.

"Diana and Carlie both played pretty good today," said Downey. "We had a couple hiccups out there, but for the most part they gave us a very consistent presence on the golf course."

Junior Marta Sanz carded a 79 to finish the day tied for 108th while sophomore Victoria Trapani finished a stroke behind her, tied for 116th with an 80. Freshman Jamie Yun rounded out the Auburn lineup, tied for 121st with an 81.

In the team race, San Jose State and Southern California are tied for the lead with 4-under 284s. Duke is the only other team under par, in third with a 2-under 286. Alabama is fourth at even-par while UCLA and Purdue are tied for fifth with 1-over 289s.

Individually, San Jose State's Regan de Guzman is in the lead with a 5-under 67. Duke's Celine Boutier and Alabama's Stephanie Meadow are tied for second with 3-under 69s. Ally McDonald (Mississippi State) and Annie Park (Southern California) round out the top five, tied for fourth with 2-under 70s.

Second-round play begins with tee times off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees at 6:30 a.m. CT, Tuesday. Auburn will tee off in the second wave from 11:59 a.m. - 12:43 p.m. off No. 1, playing alongside Michigan State and San Jose State.
