Women's golf finishes 15th at the NCAA East Regional

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Auburn women’s golf team concluded its 2013-14 season Saturday at the NCAA East Regional Championship, finishing 15th overall with a 23-over 887. The Tigers shot 5-over 293 on the final day of action.

Hosted by Florida State, the NCAA East Regional was a 54-hole stroke play championship that was played at the SouthWood Golf Club in Tallahassee, Fla. The par-72 course played at 6,257 yards for the three-day tournament.

“We had a tough tournament. It’s hard to take after we fought so hard all year to get here,” Auburn head coach Kim Evans said. “We had our chances, but didn’t get the job done. We look forward to getting back to action next year.”

Senior Marta Sanz and junior Victoria Trapani finished tied for 47th overall at 6-over 222 as Auburn’s top finishers. Sanz, playing in her final tournament for the Tigers, shot 1-over 73 in Saturday’s final round. Trapani was Auburn’s lone player under par, shooting 1-under 71 on day three to finish out the NCAA East Regional.

One shot back were sophomore Alex Harrell and freshman Clara Baena tying for 55th overall at 7-over 223. Baena posted a score of 2-over 74 in the final round, while Harrell shot 3-over 75. Senior Diana Fernandez finished tied for 106th overall in her final competition of her career for the Tigers at 16-over 232, shooting 8-over 80 on Saturday.

In the team race, Vanderbilt took the regional title at 24-under 840, shooting 14-under 274 in the final round. South Carolina (854) was second, NC State and Duke tied for third (860) and Stanford (866) to take fifth. Virginia (869), Tulane (871) and Campbell (879) rounded out the top-eight to advance to the NCAA Championships in Tulsa, Okla., May 20-23.

Vanderbilt’s Jenny Hahn took the regional title at 9-under 207, carding a 6-under 66 on the final day of action. Baylor’s Hayley Davis and Vanderbilt’s Kendall Martindale tied for second at 6-under 210. South Carolina’s Justine Dreher, Vanderbilt’s Irina Gabasa and NC State’s Augusta James tied for fourth at 5-under 211.
