Auburn splits in match play on second day at Liz Murphey Collegiate

April 5, 2014

ATHENS, Ga. – The Auburn women’s golf team went 1-1 during the first two rounds of match play at the Liz Murphy Collegiate Classic on Saturday.

The Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic is a three-day tournament that features both stroke and match play. The tournament is played at the University of Georgia Golf Course at par 72, 6,335 yards.

The Tigers fell in their first match of the day to No. 1 Southern Cal, 3-1, but rebounded with a 3-0 victory against Northwestern in the afternoon round, winning 3-0. Auburn will have to await its opponent for the fifth-place match at the tournament, facing either Alabama or Denver. That match was suspended, tied at 2-2, and will resume Sunday morning at 8 a.m. ET to determine Auburn’s opponent.

“We started out the day against USC, but didn’t play strong enough to take them down,” Auburn head coach Kim Evans said. “We fell in a couple of matches which stopped our momentum. We came out in the afternoon against Northwestern and really played well. All of our players did their job, taking care of business.”

Victoria Trapani, Diana Fernandez, and Clara Baena all provided wins for the Tigers in their win over Northwestern. Trapani, who won both of her matches on Saturday, downed Northwestern’s Kacie Komoto, 2-and-1, while Diana Fernandez put together a solid round in the afternoon session to defeat the Wildcats’ Suchaya Tangkamolprasert, 4-and-3.

Baena, Auburn’s lone freshman in the lineup, was victorious 3-and-2 to knock off Northwestern’s Hana Lee. Auburn’s Alex Harrell and Marta Sanz were still on the course when play was halted.

USC got the best of Auburn in Saturday’s first match of the day. In the battle of the No. 4 and 5 seeds, Trapani was the lone winner for Auburn. The junior led wire-to-wire with a pair of birdies in her round to win her match, 5-and-4 over USC’s Victoria Morgan.

Fernandez fell 1-up in a tight match against the Trojans’ Gabby Then. The senior took the lead with a birdie on No. 13, but Then tied the match two holes later and won the match on No. 18 with a birdie. Both, Baena and senior Marta Sanz were defeated 3-and-2.

Auburn’s round will tee off from 9-9:48 a.m. in Athens in the fifth-place match in the “red” bracket. USC and Arkansas will play for the tournament’s championship. Live scoring for the tournament can be found on BirdieFire.com.
