ATHENS, Ga. - The Auburn women's golf team fired a first-round total of 11-over 299 on the first day of action at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic on Friday.
The Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic is a three-day tournament that features both stroke and match play. The tournament is being played at the University of Georgia Golf Course at par 72, 6,335 yards.
The Tigers tied for fifth during the tournament's opening round of stroke play which qualified Auburn to compete in the "red" bracket of match play to compete for the team championship. Auburn faces top-ranked USC in the opening round of match play starting Saturday morning.
Freshman Clara Baena carded the low round of the day with a 1-over 73, to tie for 11th overall. Sophomore Alex Harrell was just behind Baena, tying for 15th overall in the first round with a 2-over 74, including a team-high five birdies.
Senior Diana Fernandez shot 3-over 75 during Friday's opening round to tie for 22rd, while junior Victoria Trapani finished at 5-over 77 to tie for 40th. Senior Marta Sanz carded a 6-over 78 during the tournament's only round of stroke play, tying for 45th.
Northwestern earned the No. 1 seed for Saturday's first round of match play with a round of 11-under 277, 14 shots ahead of second-place Arkansas' 3-over 291. Alabama was third at 5-over 293, while USC was fourth at 6-over 294.
Northwestern's Hana Lee and Arkansas' Gaby Lopez shot six-under 66 for the low round of the day. Alabama's Hannah Collier was third at 5-under 67, while Northwestern's Kaitlin Park and Elizabeth Szokol were fourth and fifth, at 3-under 69 and 2-under 70, respectively.
The tournament begins tomorrow with Auburn teeing off from 7:40-8:20 a.m. ET. The Tigers will play their second round of match play Saturday afternoon, before wrapping up the event on Sunday. Live scoring for the Liz Murphy Collegiate Classic can be found at BirdieFire.com.
