GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The No. 5/6 Auburn women's golf team carded a 12-over 292 in the final round of the SunTrust Women's Gator Invitational Sunday, finishing the tournament with a 45-over 885 and a tie for sixth. Sophomore Marta Sanz led the Tigers individually, finishing in a tie for ninth with a 7-over 217.
Hosted by the University of Florida, the SunTrust Women's Gator Invitational was a 54-hole stroke play tournament played at the Mark Bostic Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla. The par 70 course played at 6,004 yards for the tournament.
"We had a tough tournament this week and never got our great energy back from the first round," said Auburn head coach Kim Evans. "We have a lot of work to do over the next week or so to get ready for another tough tournament at Georgia."
Marta Sanz notched her fourth top-10 finish of the season, carding a 2-over 72 on Sunday to finish the tournament in a tie for ninth at 7-over 217. She tallied four bogeys on the round, but picked up birdies on Nos. 10 and 15 to finish with a 72.
"Marta had a good tournament and picked up another top-10 finish," said Evans. "She continues to do a great job this spring, matching her good run in the fall."
Junior Carlie Yadloczky also finished the day with a 2-over 72, finishing the tournament in a tie for 35th with a 14-over 224. Senior Haley Wilson earned her third top-20 finish of the season, carding a 5-over 75 in the final round to finish in a tie for 20th at 10-over 220.
Freshman Victoria Trapani carded one of her two birdies on her 16th hole, giving her a 3-over 73 on the day. Senior Patricia Sanz rounded out the Auburn lineup, finishing in a tie for 82nd at 20-over 240 after posting a 79 on Sunday.
Sophomore Diana Fernandez finished as the top individual player in the tournament, placing in a tie for 39th with a 15-over 225. She carded a 7-over 77 in Sunday's final round.
In the team race, host Florida tied for the low round of the day to pull ahead and take the title. The Gators carded a 7-over 287 to finish with a 24-over 864. Alabama finished second with a 25-over 865 while Florida State took third with a 32-over 872.
Georgia placed fourth with a 37-over 877, followed by Duke in fifth with a 42-over 882. Auburn, Arkansas and South Florida finished tied for sixth with 45-over 885s.
Individually, Florida State's Maria Salinas took medalist honors with a 4-under 206. Camilla Hedberg (Florida) and Christina Miller (South Florida) tied for second with 2-under 208s while Alabama's Stephanie Meadow and Arkansas' Emily Tubert tied for fourth with even-par 210s.
Auburn will return to the course March 30 - April 1 at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga. The tournament, hosted by Georgia, is the Tigers' final regular-season competition before the SEC Championship, April 20-22.
