March 1, 2011
NEW ORLEANS - The No. 18/20 Auburn women's golf team carded an even-par 288 Tuesday in the final round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship, moving into 10th place with a 24-over 888. Senior Cydney Clanton posted a final-round 67 to move into a tie for 11th with an even-par 216.
Hosted by Tulane University, the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship was a three-day, 72-hole stroke play event held at the English Turn Golf & Country Club. The par-72 course played at 6,105 yards for the tournament.
"The team really hung in there really well and was able to finish strong," said Auburn head coach Kim Evans. "It was a tough day on the course with the wind and cold, but I thought everyone stepped up and played really well. This was the best field we will see until the NCAA Tournament, so it was important to finish on a good note."
After carding a pair of rounds in the 70s the first two days of the tournament, Clanton rolled through the final round with the low score of the day at 5-under 67. The round, which included six birdies and a bogey, moved her up 22 places into a tie for 11th with an even-par 216 in the 96-player field.
Also coming in with big final rounds were junior Patricia Sanz and senior Karlin Beck. Sanz, playing in the tournament as an individual, posted a 1-under 71 to come in a tie for 18th with a 3-over 219. Beck carded an even-par 72 in the final round to finish the event in a tie for 22nd at 4-over 220.
"Cydney, Patricia and Karlin all played well and did a great job," said Evans. "Our task now is to do this for three days, not just one.
"Cydney looked great today and really had a big-time round. She played well the entire event, her scores in the first and second rounds just did not reflect it. It was nice to see her come through on the last day."
Sophomore Carlie Yadloczky finished the tournament with a 6-over 78, coming in a tie for 64 with a 14-over 230. Freshman Marta Sanz rounded out the Auburn line up with a final-round 75. She finished in a tie for 71st with a 16-over 232.
In the team race, it was Southern California coming from behind with a 6-under-par 282 in the final round to take first place with a 4-over 868. Alabama finished second with an 8-over 872 while host Tulane and Duke tied for third with 15-over 879s. Purdue and Virginia rounded out the top five in a tie for fifth with 16-over 880s.
Individually, Alabama's Stephanie Meadow took the title with a 5-under 211. LSU's Megan McChrystal finished second finished with a 4-under 212. The Duke duo of Laetitia Beck and Lindy Duncan tied for third with 3-under 213s while Arizona State's Giulia Molinaro and Tulane's Maribel Lopez Porras tied for fifth with 2-under 214s.
