Rio Grande, Puerto Rico - The sixth-ranked Auburn women's golf team shot a four-over par 292 on Friday and stands in a tie for second place at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, played at the par 72, 6,000-yard Coco Beach Golf Course in Rio Grande.
"We came out and played well for our first tournament in over three months," Auburn head coach Kim Evans said. "Mariana had a great day and we look forward to seeing what she can do tomorrow. We have room for improvements and hopefully we can make those adjustments tomorrow and put ourselves in position to win."
The Tigers trail leader Texas Christian by just three strokes (289) and are even with second place Oklahoma State (292). Auburn leads top-ranked Georgia by 10 strokes.
Individually, Mariana Macias shot a two-under round of 70, her best opening round score of her career, and is in fourth place. Candace Schepperle is in eighth place after shooting an even par round of 72. Nicole Hage is 13th after carding a 1-over 73, while Marisa Millian stands in 53rd after shooting a 5-over 77 and Margaret Shirley is 62nd with an opening round of 79. Abigale Schepperle, who was originally in the lineup, did not make the trip due to an illness.
