RIO GRANDE, PUERTO RICO – The No. 29 Auburn women’s golf team finished the first day of play at the 12th Annual Lady Puerto Rico Classic in a tie for sixth with a 10-over 298. Sophomore Alex Harrell is tied for second after firing a 1-under 71.
The par 72 course is playing at 5,826 yards for the three-day event. The tournament hosted by Purdue is held at the River Course at Rio Mar Resort.
Harrell continued with her strong play as just one of five players with a round under par in the opening round. The sophomore finished tied for first at last weekend’s Lady Bulldog Invitational. Marta Sanz posted a first-round score of 1-over 73 and is tied for eighth.
Diana Fernandez carded a two-over 74 and is tied for 18th after the first round. Jamie Yun ended the first day with an 8-over, 80. Clara Baena fired a 9-over 81 in the opening round and is tied for 69th.
Arkansas leads the tournament after the first day of play, firing an even-par round of 288. Alabama is second with a 7-over 295, while Iowa State is just one shot back with an 8-over 296. North Carolina State and Augusta State are tied for fourth with rounds of 9-over 297. The Tigers are tied for sixth with Georgia, carding 10-over 298.
Individually, Arkansas’ Emily Tubert leads the field after carding a 4-under 68 on the tournament’s first day. Harrell is in a four-way tie for second with Purdue’s Aurora Kan, NC State’s Brittany Marchand and Iowa State’s Prima Thammaraks.
The tournament continues on Monday with an 8 a.m. start. The final round will begin with an 8:30 a.m. start time on Tuesday morning. Live scoring for the tournament is be available via GolfStat.com.
