AUBURN, Ala. – The Auburn equestrian team, which won the 2013 Overall and Hunt Seat National Championships a year ago, will enter the 2013-14 season as the second-ranked squad nationally, as announced by the National Collegiate Equestrian Association selection committee on Monday.
Auburn comes in at No. 2, just behind conference rival Georgia, who was the overall runner-up last season. All four Southeastern Conference teams rank among the nation’s top 10 with South Carolina selected third and Texas A&M checking in at No. 6.
“I am happy with the rankings. We have a lot of new talent, and as good as we were last year, we stand to be even better,” said head coach Greg Williams. “Our returners are looking really good and we have some new riders that should make an impact throughout the course of the season.”
Auburn has five returning All-Americans on the roster this season – four of which rode for the Tigers a year ago: sophomore Elizabeth Benson (Hunt Seat), Rachel Lin (Hunt Seat), Stephanie Rucci (Western) and Jennifer Waxman (Hunt Seat) -- and Demi Stiegler (Hunt Seat), a junior transfer from TCU.
The equestrian team kicks off its season September 28 against Fresno State at the Auburn Horse Center. Meet time is set for 10 a.m. and admission is free.
The 2014 SEC Equestrian Championships are slated for March 28-29, 2014 in Blythewood, S.C.
The 2014 NCEA Championships take place April 17-19, 2014 in Waco, Texas, marking the first year one championship will be contested, rather than separate championships by disciplines.
