AUBURN - The No. 2 ranked Auburn equestrian team will host the Southern Equestrian Championships Friday and Saturday at the Auburn Equestrian Center. Friday's meet against No. 5 South Carolina is set to begin at 1 p.m. CT. The winner of that meet will compete against No. 1 Georgia on Saturday at 10 a.m. for the championship.
"The postseason is an intense time for athletes, particularly if you are an equestrian in the SEC," said Auburn head coach Greg Williams. "All of the recent national championships have been won by Auburn, South Carolina and with the most wins, Georgia. There will be some incredible rides this weekend, and we are counting on our Auburn girls to turn in the majority of them."
Auburn is 12-3 on the season with wins coming over No. 8 Texas Christian, Southern Methodist, Tennessee-Martin, No. 3 Texas A&M, Sacred Heart, Delaware State, No. 5 South Carolina, No. 9 New Mexico State, No. 4 Oklahoma State, No. 7 Baylor, No. 1 Georgia and No. 6 Kansas State.
No. 5 South Carolina comes in at 7-5 and No. 1 Georgia is 12-2. The Tigers defeated the Gamecocks 10-9 in Blythewood, S.C., on Feb. 6 and then defeated the Bulldogs at home 12-6 on March 6.
Riding for the Tigers on Friday in Hunt Seat Equitation on the Flat are Chelsea Anheuser, Anna Becker, Katie Breedlove, Maggie McAlary and Lindsay Portela with Rachel Cooper on demonstration and Ali Loprete as the alternate.
Riding in Western Horsemanship are Bailey Dymond, Kristin Hansen, Jessica Jones, Kylie Miller and Indy Roper with Jessica Remey on demonstration and Casey Fowler as the alternate.
If Auburn defeats South Carolina, for Saturday's championship riding in Hunt Seat Equitation on the Flat are Chelsea Anheuser, Katie Breedlove, Ali Loprete, Maggie McAlary and Lindsay Portela with Mallory Kolpin on demonstration and Anna Becker as the alternate.
Admission is free for both meets.
