Athens, Ga. - The Auburn equestrian team (3-3) suffered a 14-6 loss from undefeated Georgia on Saturday. Georgia swept Auburn in all four events of the afternoon and the Tiger have now lost both matches of the season to the Bulldogs.
"We had some fair rides on both sides today, we just didn't ride up to our expectations," said Auburn head coach Greg Williams
. "We needed to be a lot more aggressive in horsemanship and our reining rides were fair. Our over fences riders did a good job, I just wish we could've gotten a few different scores. We just needed to be more technically correct on the flat."
Georgia came out strong, defeating Auburn 3-2 over fences. Freshman Katie Breedlove defeated her opponent 78-75 while sophomore Jenny Reinhart defeated hers 77-70, the highest margin of victory for the Tigers in the meet. The Bulldogs then pulled out a 4-1 win in horsemanship. The only Tiger taking the win in horsemanship was freshman Jessica Jones 71-70.5.
After the break, Auburn fell 4-1 on the flat with freshman Chelsea Anhueser scoring the only point with a 76-73 win. Auburn fell 3-2 in reining, the last event of the meet. The two Tigers adding to Auburn's total were junior Kimberly Tidwell 74.5-69 and senior Julie Gibbes 73-72.5.
Earning the only MVP honors for the Tigers was freshman Rebecca Rifkin on the flat.
"That was one of our highlights on the hunt seat side," said Williams. "She had a tough horse. She didn't even pick up the win against her opponent, but the judge felt she was one of the most effective riders she saw out there today."
The Tigers return home for its next two meets of the season when they face South Carolina on Feb. 24 and UT-Martin on Feb. 25. The meets will begin at 10 am and 1 pm, respectively.
