The Auburn equestrian team opened up their spring season with an 11-8 victory over Stephen F. Austin Sunday at the Auburn Equestrian Center, improving their record to 2-2.
"It was very important for us to win on both sides today," said Auburn head coach Greg Williams. "I just wish our western team didn't make so many mistakes and let it get so close. We were riding different riders in different positions, and it really changes things up. I am really proud of the hunt seat girls. We are really going to have to tighten up, especially on the western end, for next weekend when we have the number one western team coming in."
The western team tied with the Ladyjacks 5-5, but Auburn came away with the win by posting a raw score of 644-638. Earning MVP honors for the Tigers was freshman Jessica Jones for western reining.
"I feel like I had a good ride besides the bauble that I had," said Jones. "It feels good to be MVP even with my bauble. The western side had a lot of mistakes. We need to be consistent and get better before our next meet."
However, the hunter seat brought home the win for Auburn, outscoring SFA 6-3. Receiving MVP honors for Auburn on the hunter seat side were freshmen Chelsea Anheuser over fences and Katie Breedlove in equitation.
"I was really nervous coming in," said Breedlove, "because I have never competed in this position before. I am really excited that I did well. I was holding my breath at the start of my ride, but I felt that I rode well towards the end. I think that we are all ready for the next meet."
Auburn's next meet will be Sunday, Feb. 4 at 1 pm when they host the defending National Western Champions, Oklahoma State at the Auburn Equestrian Center.
