Auburn Equestrian Falls to Georgia 15-5 in Finals of Southern Equestrian Championships

Bishop, Ga. - The top-seeded Auburn equestrian team (6-5) lost to host and No.2 seed Georgia (12-4) 15-5 Saturday in the finals of the 2009 Southern Equestrian Championships. The Bulldogs defeated the Tigers 6-4 in Hunt Seat and 9-1 in Western. The Bulldogs defeated No. 3 seed South Carolina 15-5 Friday in the preliminary round.

"Final scores weren't close, but the rides were," said Auburn head coach Greg Williams. "We had a lot of really good rides today. We'll get a week and a half of hard work in and go to nationals."

Georgia won Hunt Seat Equitation over Fences 3-2 behind MVP Haylie Jayne, who defeated Anna Schierholz 159-152. Auburn's Grace Socha also earned MVP honors defeating Kelley Cowperthwait 164-160. Other Bulldog winners included Michelle Morris over Jessica Braswell 160-158 and Kacy Jenkins over Ali Loprete 158-143. Other Tiger winners include Maggie McAlary over Emma Lipman 160-143.

Auburn's Rebecca Rifkin and Georgia's Emma Lipman earned co-MVP honors in Hunt Seat Equitation on the Flat. Rifkin defeated Katie Hagerty 166-162, and Lipman defeated Jenny Reinhart 157-152.5. Georgia won the event 3-2. Other Bulldog winners included Michelle Morris over Chelsea Anheuser 157-147.5 and Haylie Jayne over Katie Breedlove 157-147. Other Tiger winners include Maggie McAlary over Amy Klebesadel 163-154.

Georgia swept Western Horsemanship 5-0 behind co-MVPs Lauren Love and Kelley Mundrick. Love defeated Bailey Dymond 148.5-147.5, and Mundrick defeated Jessica Jones 153.5-149. Other Bulldog winners included Katelyn Van Allen over Kylie Miller 153-146, Dana Kennedy over Courtney Kobak 153-143 and Alicia Shrum over Amy Bohan 153-145.5.



Georgia won Western Reining 4-1 behind co-MVPs Nichole Grant and Kate Stewart. Grant defeated Kelsey George 140.5-118, and Stewart defeated Lyndsey Jordan 138.5-137. Other Bulldog winners included Sarah Locker over Kim Pope 133.5-0 (0 refers to a no score because of a penalty) and Diandra St. Hilaire over Jessica Jones 134-130.5. Tiger winners include Paige Monfore over Hannah Dyer 140.5-135.

Auburn returns to action April 16-18 in Waco, Texas, for the Varsity Equestrian National Championships.
