AUBURN, Ala. -- The second-ranked Auburn equestrian team fell to the top-ranked South Carolina squad, 12-7, in the finale conference meet of the regular season. The meet had seeding implications, and the loss gives the Tigers the third-seed for the SEC Championships, set for March 28.

“We came up short on the rides we needed today,” said head coach Greg Williams. “We are disappointed in the loss and little dejected. We will work on closing out the regular season with a win next week and then focus on the SEC Championships.”

The meet started with equitation on the flat, where Auburn got in a hole after a 4-1 loss. Demi Stiegler was the sole winner for the Tigers with a 72-67 win over USC’s All-American Katherine Schmidt. Simultaneously, in the western ring the two squad split a pair of points with Hailey Munger and Griffin Knight winning for Auburn. The Gamecocks took a 6-3 lead into intermission.

The second portion of the meet began with fences and where Auburn went 2-3 with wins from Quincy Hayes and Elizabeth Benson. Benson earned Most Outstanding Player honors with her score of 80, one of only two 80 scores on the day. The Tigers trailed 9-5 leading into horsemanship. Knight won her second head-to-head matchup of the day scoring a 71.5, and Lucy Igoe won with a 72.5 mark. Knight now has 12 overall wins this year for Auburn.

Auburn will return home to host the last meet of the regular season against sixth-ranked New Mexico State. Meet time is set for 1 p.m. CT at the AU Horse Center.
