Head Coach Nell Fortner
"That was a good way to finish out our pre-holiday schedule. I have to give Oakland credit; that team plays hard for 40 minutes. That was not an easy team to defend, whether we were playing a man or a zone. I thought we had to work hard for 40 minutes. What I am most proud of was the focus that we maintained for 40 minutes. I think that was one of the best things about it. There were times when Oakland came back on us and we had to stop their runs, and we did. We turned the ball over too many times in the first half, but we only turned it over six times in the second half, and I can live with that. I thought the 14 turnovers in the first half was the difference. While we couldn't pull away from them, you don't turn it over in the second half and we had the opportunity to pull away."
On defending Oakland's motion offense...
"It was hard because we were coming off the road and had a tough pre-holiday schedule. We have been going east, west, north and south. We had a really good day of practice yesterday. Their focus has been so good, and that is a sign of a team growing up. I am really proud of them for that. They are starting to mature a little bit. Hopefully we'll keep going down that path."
"I think there were some games that were easier than others, but after going on the road and having to play on the road after we traveled and are tired, it becomes easy to get selfish as a player and let someone else do the work. They didn't do that. I've seen them accept the challenges and step up to the plate, and that is really encouraging."
Sherell Hobbs, Guard
"They run that motion offense. That is the best one. It is constant movement, and that is hard to defend. They were fast off of the ball. The refs let us play really physical. The little ticky-tac things were hurting us, but we got through it easily. We responded well to it."
On her game...
"Someone told me that the paper said that I was in a shooting slump, but I never noticed that I was in one. I guess I am out of it now though. We had a lack of focus in the first half, but we got it back after halftime."
On the schedule...
"I think that it is helping to get us ready for the SEC. Last year, we lost games that we shouldn't have. This year, the games we lost were against teams were really good."
DeWanna Bonner, Guard
"There are so many options when you run the motion offense. We couldn't really stop the motion offense. It was really troublesome. They were moving constantly, so you couldn't just stick to one man. They were guarding KeKe (Carrier) hard, so that left the outside open."
On her play...
"I think that I played more aggressive because I had family members here. I really didn't know that I was playing more aggressive.
Head Coach Beckie Francis
"I was happy that we went to the free-throw line and attacked the basket. For 30 minutes, we ran our offense well and they had a hard time stopping us. I was pleased and proud of our effort today. We played hard, but we need more intensity for 40 minutes. At times, it almost looked like we were tired, but we work on conditioning so that doesn't happen. I thought Nell (Fortner) did a good job of switching defenses on us, and that created some turnovers. We have to learn to value the basketball better."
"Bonnie (Baker) had trouble guarding her and she is our go-to defender. A lot of people around the country are going to have trouble guarding her (Bonner). She is 6'4" and gets a lot of rebounds, but that is not an excuse, we need to do better."
