Women's Basketball Announces SEC Schedule
Aug. 12, 2010
AUBURN - Five Sunday home games, including meetings with Kentucky, LSU and defending Southeastern Conference champion Tennessee highlight Auburn's 2011 SEC schedule, head coach Nell Fortner announced Thursday.
The SEC announced each team's 16-game conference schedule this week, completing Auburn's schedule for the 2010-11 season.
"It always fun to get the schedule and see who you start with, who you finish with and everything in between," said Fortner. "It is another good, tough SEC schedule and we are excited for the start of the season."
Of Auburn's eight SEC home games, five are Sunday afternoon games while three are Thursday evening games.
"I like the idea of having five of our eight home games on Sundays," said Fortner. "We draw some good crowds on Sundays and I am excited about packing some good crowds into the new Auburn Arena."
The Tigers open the slate on Sunday, Jan. 2 with a road game against in-state rival Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Auburn's first SEC game in the new Auburn arena will be Thursday, Jan. 6 as the Tigers host Florida.
Auburn will go on the road for a Sunday, Jan. 9 game at Vanderbilt returning to Auburn arena for four of its next five games. The Tigers will host back-to-back games against Ole Miss (Jan. 13) and LSU (Jan. 16) before a road trip to Mississippi State on Thursday, Jan. 20. Auburn then returns home for games against Tennessee (Jan. 23) and South Carolina (Jan. 30).
The month of February will open with a road trip to Lexington, Ky., on Feb. 3, for the first of two meetings with Kentucky. A Feb. 6 home game against Mississippi State breaks up the travel before the Tigers play at LSU (Feb. 10) and Arkansas (Feb. 13) for Auburn's first back-to-back road games of the season.
Auburn will complete the home-and-home with Alabama on Feb. 17 as the Crimson Tide come to Auburn Arena. The Tigers will then travel for a pair of road games to South Carolina (Feb. 20) and Georgia (Feb. 24) before wrapping up the regular season at home against Kentucky on Feb. 27.
The 2011 SEC Women's Basketball Tournament will return to Nashville, Tenn., and will take place March 3-6 at Bridgestone Arena.
Women's basketball in the SEC does not break up into divisions, allowing teams to play the other 11 members at least once. The Tigers will play home-and-homes this season with LSU, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Kentucky and Alabama.
The SEC also announced that the Sunday, Feb. 13 game at Arkansas will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2. Other games are expected to air on ESPNU, FOX Sports South, SportSouth and CSS. Those contests will be announced at a later date.
Auburn returns nine letterwinners and four starters (Jordan Greenleaf, Parrisha Simmons, Alli Smalley, Morgan Toles) from last year's team that went 15-16 (5-11 SEC). The Tigers welcome five incoming freshmen who comprise a recruiting class ranked in the top 20 in the nation by ESPN.
