Mexico City - Auburn incoming sophomore women's basketball player DeWanna Bonner scored 13 points, helping lead Team USA to a 97-57 win over Puerto Rico in the FIBA Americas U20 Championship for Women Tuesday afternoon.

The USA Women's U20 National Team jumped out to a 52-37 first-half lead and went on to out-score Puerto Rico 45-30 in the second half for the 40-point defeat.

Bonner was moved to the post for the first time with Team USA due to an injury. She responded with a 5-for-8 performance from the field and was a key component to the win, according to head coach Joanne P. McCallie.

"She was forced to play the four given our injury situation," McCallie said. "I thought she was tremendous."

"Since I've been with the USA team, I haven't played any post," Bonner said. "Tomorrow I will be better than I was tonight. I'll know the plays better from the forward position."

Courtney Paris led all scorers with 18 points in 16 minutes and six players scored in double-figures.

Team USA will take on Canada Wednesday at 2 p.m. CT in the round-robin event. The top three teams, at the end of the tournament, will earn a bid to the 2007 FIBA U21 Women's World Championship. Play continues through Saturday, Aug. 12.
