Tournament Atmosphere: Auburn Ready for Game 2 in WNIT
Terri Williams-Flournoy calls the action

AUBURN  Blanche Alverson is playing every game like it will be her last as an Auburn Tiger because, well, one of them will be. Auburn's leading rebounder, third- leading scorer, Miss Homecoming and the SEC women's basketball scholar-athlete of the year says she accepted the end was near at Senior Night.

Alverson and Auburn are in bonus time now, and the next game will be Sunday's 2 p.m. second-round WNIT game against Western Kentucky in Auburn Arena.

"No pressure, just the tournament atmosphere," says Alverson. "You've just got to take it as another game. We're just looking forward to getting out there again, getting another win and moving on."

Auburn figured to be on the road after beating UAB 80-57 in its WNIT opener. But the Tigers received the happy news it will be at home again.

"Our girls feel very comfortable playing at home," said coach Terri Williams-Flournoy.

True enough, the Tigers are 13-3 in Auburn Arena this season.

Overall, Auburn is 17-14. Western Kentucky is 22-10.

The Hilltoppers got here by beating East Carolina 88-77 in overtime of its WNIT opener. The winner of Sunday's game will play the winner of the Arkansas-Tulane game at a site and time to be determined.

To advance, Auburn will have to keep an eye on guard Alexis Govan, who averages 20.3 points per game.

Williams-Flournoy would like to see the game play out this way:

"With our height advantage, not just in our post but in our guards, we need to really get in there on the offensive glass," she said. "We cannot rely on just our jump shots to go in. " It is a tough matchup and it is a tough matchup for our posts. We may have to play a little more zone than we normally play to help out our posts inside. We also have to take care of the ball because they are forcing teams into about 20 turnovers a game."
