Auburn Makes Second Trip Ever to WNIT
Auburn has made just one trip to the WNIT in the tournaments nine year history. The Tigers went on a 5-0 run in 2003 and were crowned WNIT Champions. Auburn defeated Baylor, 64-63, in Waco, Texas, for the title. The Tigers hosted the first three rounds of the WNIT and defeated South Alabama (77-53), Florida State (68-57) and Richmond (59-53). Auburn traveled to Omaha, Neb., for the semifinal versus Creighton where Auburn prevailed, 73-62.
The Tigers continue their quest for the WNIT title on Thursday in third round action at Virginia Tech. Auburn dominated UAB in March 18 to earn the second round win, 74-60. Four Tigers scored in double figures, led by sophomore Sherell Hobb's 17 points. With the win, AU moved to 20-12 on the season and marked the first "20-win" season since 2003-04.
Sophomore DeWanna Bonner leads Auburn in scoring and rebounding as she averages 14.9 points and 8.2 boards a game. Bonner joined Auburn's elite after her 16-point performance against UAB as she now ranks in the top-30 scorer's all-time at Auburn. Bonner is joined by S. Hobbs as the only two players scoring in double figures; S. Hobbs averages 11.5 points a game. In addition, S. Hobbs poses a threat on defense as she averages 1.8 steals per contest.
Adding to AU's defensive game is freshman Jordan Greenleaf, who is four blocks shy of becoming the all-time leading freshman blocker at Auburn. Greenleaf grabs 5.5 rebounds a game, while swatting 1.3 balls a game.
The Tigers are shooting 43.6 percent from the field and making 30.8 percent of its trey's. Auburn outrebounds its opponents by a 3.5 margin, while forcing 16 turnovers a game. One of the top blocking programs in the country, Auburn swats 5.6 a game.
Scouting Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech is coming off a 10-point victory over Western Carolina in the second round of the WNIT. The Hokies were led by redshirt-sophomore Brittany Cook, who shot 9-12 from the field, scoring 20 points. Senior Nare Diawara added a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Senior Kirby Copeland leads all scorer's with 15.1 points a game, while also headlining the team with 4.5 assists and 2.2 steals a game. Diawara averages 8.2 rebounds a game to go along with 12.4 points and 1.7 blocks.
As a team, the Hokies are shooting 43.4 percent from the field, but are only making 26.2 percent of its three-pointers. Virginia Tech is averaging 39.4 rebounds a game while maintaining a 3.9 advantage over its opponents.
Head coach Beth Dukenberger is in her third year at Virginia Tech, owning a 57-36 record. Dukenberger led her Hokies team to NCAA Tournament appearances in her first two seasons.
Auburn holds the all-time series advantage 4-1 over Virginia Tech. Auburn is 2-1 when playing at Virginia Tech. The last time the two schools met on the hardwood was March 15, 1999, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament hosted by Virginia Tech. The Hokies defeated Auburn 76-61 in that meeting.
