Auburn vs. Samford

Auburn Arena

December 29, 2012

Auburn Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy

On today's game...

"We wanted to defend the 3 a little bit better, but we didn't, but we still won. I had a couple of kids who played extremely well. I thought (Najat Ouardad) played well. I thought Hasina (Muhammad) and Blanche (Alverson) played well, and (Tyrese Tanner) is just really coming along playing the top of our press. She's really getting a lot of the steals that are happening because she's forcing them with her pressure up top. I think one of the biggest things now in looking at our record at 11-2 is that we have to take this and everything that we've done into the tough SEC conference and get a little bit better at everything that we do."

On the run in the first half and what was working well...

"Ty was running all over the place, and right away, she should have known that once, unfortunately their starting point guard went out, the back-up point guard is usually not always ready and capable to handle the press, so we told her to step it up a little bit more. It kind of forced the pressure, and we were able to score quickly in transition, so that becomes easy baskets right away."

On Najat Ouardad's play...

"She's just our energizer bunny. She just plays so hard all the time. She's kind of the kid that you have to kind of live through some of her mistakes a little bit because she's going to go back and fix it and do a little bit better. Sometimes you have to pull her out and talk to her a little bit because she plays at such a high level, and she has to learn how to tone it down just a little bit. I thought she shot the ball with great confidence, and I thought she made some really good plays in transition in the open court. She was really finding our kids and giving us easy buckets in transition."

On starting conference play on Thursday...

"I think we're ready. It's like anything, you don't really know until you're thrown into the fire. Everything looks good right now, and we're playing well. I don't really so much look at the eight-game winning streak. That's kind of over now. We're about to start a new season where we're 0-0 right now. That's kind of how we're going to present it to the team because we really have to step up our play right now. When you step up your competition, you have to step up your play."

Najat Ouardad, Sr., G

On today's game...

"We knew what to expect as the team about Samford. We knew they had a lot of 3-point shooters. We were trying to contest all the 3s and make sure that we penetrated and stuff. As a team, we were really aggressive from the first four minutes of the game defensively, especially. I feel like we were really successful at traps, and that caused a lot of turnovers on their end. A lot of people on the team had steals. That was the main reason why we won the game and built up on the lead. Also, we had a lot of people shooting well tonight. We shared the ball pretty well. I feel like our team being so unselfish, we balanced everything on offense also."

On the run in the first half and what was working well...

"It was just the momentum that we had. We're so in shape that we weren't thinking about being tired or anything like that. We were just executing what Coach (Williams-Flournoy) told us to do. If we were in the right spot defensively, then the ball was just dropping in our hands. That's why we made that run."

On if she realized when she got the double-double or how close she was to a triple-double...

"Not really because I was just trying to play hard all the time, but I kind of understood when Coach was like `Get me two more steals.' Even at the moment, I'm not thinking. If my teammate's right there, I'll just tip it, and she will have the steal. I love making my teammates shine on the court, so that's all I'll be thinking about. Plus, we won the game, so that's what I'm happy about."

On if this is where the team wants to be going into conference play...

"Yes. I think that was a great game for us, not just that we won, but that we executed the plays pretty well. Defensively, we improved so much. That is important to us. We are also thinking about the SEC, so we know we're ready for Arkansas, but we have a little work to do also."

On what the team has to do to get ready for Arkansas...

"Be more aware of the mistakes that we make. Like Coach told us, we're going into the third part of our season. We have to eliminate all the little mistakes that we've already learned about."

Samford Head Coach Mike Morris

On today's game...

"Auburn is good. They are very athletic. They do a good job from a defensive standpoint of mixing up their defense and extending it. It is hard to get past it because of their length. I thought we did a pretty good job early. Obviously Shelby's (Campbell) injury limited us at the point guard position. We have roles revolving now. I thought Auburn played well. They were aggressive. When we took care of the ball, we got some good looks. We shot the ball well. We just didn't have enough of it."

On shooting 50 percent from three...

"We shot the ball well. The 26 turnovers was the problem. We didn't defend too well. A lot of that is a tough deal because we had guards playing different roles when Shelby got hurt. There wasn't a lot of time for them to rest. I thought Ashli Mayes did a good job coming off the bench. It was extremely encouraging to know that we have someone else to help us. Hopefully that gives her and the team some confidence."

On the team's effort...

"We played hard. They almost quit there for a time or two, but we didn't. Jazmine (Martin) had a great second half. I was really pleased with that. We could have quit, but we didn't. I think we wore down, but Auburn had everything to do with that."
