Auburn Quotes

Auburn 73, Ohio 54

Head Coach Nell Fortner

"I thought that was a good effort by our team.  We were coming off a long week of finals.  We had kids taking finals up until 4:30 today.  I thought they really did a good job of handling their business with their academic work, then coming to practice and putting in two good, solid days of practice Monday and Tuesday.  We did some nice things tonight.  I'm pleased with they all-around effort.  We got scoring from a lot of different facets, and that was good.  KeKe (Carrier) dominated inside, and you have Joanna (Clayden) coming off the bench and hit threes.  DeWanna (Bonner) was just cleaning the boards tonight.  We had a lot of different things work.  I think what's happening is you are starting to see a little bit of our depth really step up to the plate, and that's nice to see.

On Joanna Clayden's threes...

"They were huge.  We were up eight and she came in and opened the game up.  Ohio was playing pretty solid.  Those two threes forced them to call timeout and just opened the game up."

On Ohio cutting Auburn's lead to eight...

"I wasn't surprised.  In all of the film we watched of them and the season they are having, they are a good team.  They are deceptive.  They are small, but they shoot the ball well. They shot the ball better from the three than they did from the two.  They played very hard.  They don't give up.  They stay after it and stay after it.  It's just a scrappy team.  Those teams are tough to play because they're getting hands in all the time and getting hands on balls.  When you're knocking down shots, I don't care how tall or short you are.  When you're knocking down shots, you can play with anyone."

On Saturday's game at George Washington...

"It's a big game, there's no question.  We've talked all year about we need a signature win.  George Washington is ranked nineteenth is this week's poll.  They are having an excellent year and they have solid players.  They have a big kid inside, a big scorer.  They have a six-footer coming off the bench and quickness at the guard spot.  They have it all.  The good thing is we match up with them very well.  I'm excited about the game and I can't wait to get up there and play them.  They have NCAA Tournament under their belt from last year, and that's our future.   We have to step in there and play those kind of games and compete and get those wins."

Auburn Center KeKe Carrier

On Auburn's first game back after a week off...

"We have been practicing every day.  We really didn't need any time off.  We just needed to continue to progress and get better every game."

On Ohio...

"I think (playing hard) was their key to being that close.  They never really stopped.  When I first got into the game, I was ready to go in there.  Coach told me she wanted me to dominate tonight.  I told her okay, I will.  I had to live up to my word.  I did the best I could to do that."

On the George Washington game...

"One of our goals is to get up there, beat a ranked team, get some exposure and show the polls and everyone what we are really about.  That is what we are trying to do Saturday.

Auburn Guard DeWanna Bonner

On Auburn's first game back after a week off...

"I think we did a pretty good job tonight.  We had finals week, and everyone came out so focused when we practiced."

On Ohio cutting Auburn's lead to eight with four minutes left...

"They came out there ready to shoot.  Those girls can shoot.  With their penetration and their kicking, you had to guard their penetration to try to get to their shooters.  They had some really, really good shooters out there.  I take my hat off to them.  They never gave up even when they were down.  Even the largest lead we had, they never gave up.  Even in the last three second of the game they were still trying to steal the ball.  They really played hard."

On the George Washington game...

It will definitely be a big game.  Like coach said, it would be a signature win and that's what we want.

Ohio Head Coach Sylvia Crawley

On Auburn's dominance in the paint...

"That is not what we expected.  We have to do a better job with our post defense and not make it so easy for the players to score inside.  We have to block out better and get some rebounds."

On Rachel Frederick's off-night and Ohio's three-point shooting...

"We have more weapons than just Rachel Frederick.  We shot with confidence, and normally those shots fall.  We missed some shots early and that messed with our confidence.  We have to learn to drive to the basket, shoot higher percentage shots and get to the free throw line.  I thought we did that early in the second half, and then we got away from it a little bit.  We are going to learn from this experience and this is going to make us a better team."

Ohio Guard Lauren Kohn

On her game...

"I was feeling pretty confident with my shot tonight and my teammates had confidence in me, so I just kept shooting when open shots kept coming to me."

On Ohio's game plan...

"Our plan wasn't to necessarily shoot from outside, but those shots happen to be open for us.  Our game plan switched because and we ended up driving to the basket and looking for open shooters, which was there tonight, but we just didn't knock them down."
