Recap |  Final Stats |  Notes

Quoting Auburn head coach Nell Fortner:

"It was a good effort tonight. We came out and played well after a tough loss at Duke, having only scored 37 points, then rebounding with 91 tonight. We came out ready to play, which was good to see. We shot 57 percent, which is outstanding. KeKe (Carrier) did really well tonight with her post game. We gave up too many points, but I was pleased with our offensive output."

On freshmen...
"To have three freshmen in double figures is exciting to see. It's a great confidence builder for them. The freshmen knew coming in that they would be counted on and needed. They are our future. They're getting a lot of minutes to get them ready to play in this conference."

On 12-0 run to start second half...
"You always want to start the half strong, which is something we hadn't done yet this year. It was nice to see. Jacksonville State never went away though. They shot the three well."

On having a young team...
"We are a young team, but that's ok. They are young in basketball knowledge. You have to teach them the physical aspect, but seeing the game you have to teach a lot about the game of basketball. It's what you do with the freshmen. We're a young team, but as long as we keep moving forward that is a positive."

Auburn guard DeWanna Bonner:

On the fast pace of the game tonight...
"It's the pace we decided on for tonight. At Duke, we had to slow down a little. We used our size and speed tonight because we knew we were faster than them."

On second half...
"We picked up our defense. Defense turns to offense and we got some easy baskets."

On Auburn's size...
"Who wouldn't get frustrated with people like KeKe (Carrier) and Marita (Payne)? If you have someone that's 6-5 or 6-6 in front of you, I would get frustrated too."

On any positives taken from the loss to Duke...
"It was getting us ready for the SEC, so that's good. I didn't get my offense going in that game. It was good to see what SEC competition is going to be like. It definitely helped get us ready."

Auburn center KeKe Carrier:

On her performance tonight...
"I just wanted to get out there and be a force and help out my team however I could."

On her development as a player...
"I've come a long way since this summer. All the hard work and practice has helped a lot. I've grown as a player. I'm getting up and down the court better now."

Jacksonville State Head Coach Dave Dagostino

On the game...
"Playing a team like Auburn on the road is going to be tough. We tried to play in four- minute spurts and build our way back up after the half. Doing that makes you tired and it gets tough. Offensively, we wanted to spurt the pace. We gave up the double penetration. Auburn made adjustments at the half too, but we couldn't get there."

On Auburn...
Auburn is very quick. KeKe Carrier is tough. A 6-7 player on the women's side is equivalent to a 7-0 for men, and there is not an answer for that. Auburn went to her a lot. When she was on the bench, we didn't have to worry about guarding her and we could put in some threes. When (Marita) Payne is the secondary, size definitely hurts. We tried a lot of techniques to attack. Our goal was to get around those two, and it was a challenge."

On playing on the road...
"When we play on the road, we get to see our weaknesses and that helps us out. We like to have challenges on the road to prepare for the conference. I am pleased with our effort."

On playing Auburn next season...
"We are going to continue this next season. I like this affiliation and the conference. It is positive for us. We want to do more for in-state basketball rivalries. These girls all competed against each other or with each other; it helps to build the fan base of the state."
