Auburn Post Game Quotes
Head Coach Nell Fortner
"It is always nice to win. There is no doubt about that. We did have way too many turnovers, and we did not shoot very well from the free throw line. It is a concern, because the turnovers come as a product of shooting first and passing second. We have to create shots and then take the shot. I know when I go back and look at the film, more than half of those turnovers were a shot opportunity first and then we turned it over trying to do something else. I am pleased with how our offense is going and how we are pushing the ball, but we have to cut down on the turnovers."
On DeWanna Bonner adapting to Auburn's offense... "DeWanna is a great player, and you want her to adapt to the offense. You want the offense to do well for her and take advantage of what she can do. She can do so many things, because she is such a versatile player. We have to keep getting the whole offense ready, and those coming off the bench have to be ready."
On coaching Auburn's current offense... "I have a lot of confidence in these players, because I have known them for so long. This is our third year to coach this group. I know them well enough to know that they can shoot the ball, and they are aggressive to the basket. We have to play that style to take advantage of what they do."
Alli Smalley, Freshman Guard
On improving offensively... "Offense is something we are working on in practice. Coach Fortner has been getting onto us the last couple of games, because we have not been pushing it as hard and taking as many shots. We are really working on that and continuing to get better."
DeWanna Bonner, Junior Guard
On Auburn increasing its shooting... "It is weird to have the coach tell you to shoot all the time, but things are coming along well. Alli Smalley could have had more than 20 points tonight if she would have shot the ball more. It is a good thing for us, because she can let us play ball and that is what we need to do."
UAB Post Game Quotes
Head Coach Audra Smith
On team's performance ... " We dug ourselves in a deep whole too early in the game and it was a struggle for us to get out the whole game. I felt that in the second half we really went out there and fought hard to make a come back. Auburn tightened up when we started to come back and shut us down in the end. Giving up 18 offensive rebounds, having 27 turnovers and sending them to the line so many times makes it impossible to win.
On Auburn... "They did a really good job out there today. Allie Smalley really gave them a big boost of confidence. She hit a lot of big three's which also hurt our team's confidence. DeWanna Bonner played great. She is very versatile so it's hard to stop her. Our strategy in this game was to let DeWanna score her points and really focus in on stopping the rest of the players.
On what sparked UAB's better play in the second half ... "In the locker room I told my girls to just get out there and chip away at Auburn's lead. Our goal was to be within 10 points around the 10 minute mark and we did that. I also told them that they had to buckle down because we were giving up way too many easy points and turning the ball over too much.
On the play of Crystal McFadden... "She played fabulously. She is coming off a big game at Illinois and really came and played hard again today. I am glad to just have her back because she was out all last season with injury. What I love about Crystal is that she is very versatile. She can play the perimeter well, she also plays the post well and she can finish at the basket. I am very proud of her performance today. She played great even though we were down most of the game.
