Auburn vs. Western Kentucky Mar. 24, 2013 WNIT Second Round Auburn Arena

Auburn head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy

Opening statement...

"Of course, much credit to my young ladies. They really had to hang in there and they really had to fight. Western Kentucky was a team that kept coming at us. They played extremely hard. They hit a lot of shots at crucial times, but kudos to our team for just continuing to stay in there and fight hard. (Tyrese Tanner) and Hasina (Muhammad), you look at their points and you see how well they played, but I think overall as a team, we played really well."

On if she expected to have an offensive rebounding advantage with the size advantage...

"You always hope that you can when you look at the size, but we knew Western Kentucky was a scrappy team. They were going to double us in the post. They were a very good offensive rebounding team themselves. You think you have an advantage because of height, but you just never know really until the outcome of the game."

On getting four offensive rebounds in the first possession of the game...

"I think it sets the tone, and the young ladies know right away that `this is a team that we can get to the offensive boards. Coach said it. We saw it on film, but we've actually done it, and now it almost feels like it's something that we're capable of doing.'"

On making adjustments in second half to keep Western Kentucky from hitting as many 3-pointers...

"In the second half, we just did a little bit more man. I really was kind of skeptical of playing man-to-man because (Chastity Gooch) is hard to guard down there for our post. We played a little bit more man and just tried to be there on the catch rather than going out to them in our zone. We were just a second late getting to them in our zone defense."

On if this is the best the team has played all season...

"I don't know. I think we might have had a few other games where we've played well, but this is definitely one of our better games."

On Hasina Muhammad and Tyrese Tanner's performances and how well the team is playing as a whole...

"Especially when you think about those two who are coming back next year, I think it just gives them a boost of confidence, and they understand how good of players they can be. Especially Tyrese Tanner, the coaches have really been on her expressing to her how good she can be. Ty is such an all-around player. The only thing she really can't do is shoot the 3, and she hit one of them tonight. Other than that, she plays excellent defense. She can get to the boards. She's a big guard. She can post up. She has a midrange. She can attack the basket. There's really not much that she can't do. I think she's starting to realize that. For Hasina, I think it was finally great to have Hasina back. It had been a long time since she had been able to score these type of points in games. Like I said before, when we get Ty scoring, Hasina scoring and as soon as we get Blanche to catch back up, but Blanche had nine rebounds, nine points, seven assists. It just says a lot about those three and what they're doing for our team right now."

On what she remembers from playing Tulane earlier in the season...

"I remember that we were struggling extremely hard to win that game. They play hard. They're a very good team, well coached team. It was a tough game for us there. We really had to come back and play extremely well in the second half to get that victory."

On Chadarryl Clay's performance...

"She did really well. She had to come in and run the point a little bit, and she got a little tired, but she had to. I think they respected her more as a shooter versus (Najat Ouardad). They just didn't play (Ouardad) at all, so when we had Chadarryl at the point, we were actually able to run our offense a little bit more."

On not playing Clay or Ouardad when Western Kentucky was trying to cut down on Auburn's lead...

"They just weren't guarding (Ouardad), and Chadarryl got tired. We had to put Hasina at the point a little bit."

On Auburn's defensive performance...

"Our defense was awesome. We forced them into 26 turnovers. The thing about our defense, when everybody starts clicking and when you can get your back line involved, Blanche (Alverson) had six steals which means we were finally getting our back line involved in our press defense. When you can get that back line involved, it becomes a whole different ballgame."

Auburn Player Quotes

Hasina Muhammad

On her good shooting in the first half...

"Yeah, it was just coming my way, but none of them came my way the second half."

Tyrese Tanner

On good team and individual rebounding...

"Coach always told us to attack the basket, and we scouted this team and they were foul prone, so for us to get to the free throw line and our shots were going in. They really didn't foul us as much."

On this tournament run being the best the team has played all season...

"Yes, I think it now just really clicked in for us. I hate that it did post-season, but I'm glad we all got along, and have fallen into our press, and getting steals, and pushing the ball, and making shots."

Blanche Alverson

On the fast tempo that started early in the game...

"That was definitely a big emphasis we made because we knew we had the advantage over them in our height and our physicalness. So we wanted to come in and get a lot of O-boards early, and use that to our advantage, and just kill them in the paint and make sure we put the emphasis on that."

On Hasina's game...

"It was awesome. I love it when Hasina plays like this. She's aggressive, getting steals, getting hands on the ball, getting touches, getting easy finishes, tip ins on the glass. We she does that kind of stuff it just fuels us, and gives us energy to move forward and keep the energy going."

On getting to host Wednesday's game...

"It's great; I think we play really well at home. I think our crowd fuels us and we're really comfortable with our gym, and we shoot the ball well, and play good defense. I feel like we're more aggressive at home, so I think it's awesome."

Western Kentucky Head Coach Michelle Clark-Heard

On Auburn's size advantage and what her strategy was...

"I think we did a lot of different change-ups. We were doubling off people, and we were trying to go to different defenses and switch it up. We did everything we had to, and I was super proud of my kids because we fought the whole game. We got it to 8-10 points, but as you said, it was a size advantage and nothing can dictate how hard my kids played."

On the press in particular...

"I think we handled it at times, and we made some miscues and threw it away on different plays. When you have 6-2, 6-3 players standing on the front of the press, it's tough. We're still a young team. I have sophomores, and we have to continue growing and working on things. The press did what they were supposed to do and that's what Coach (Williams-Flournoy) has done for her team, and we understood that. We were ready for it, but at times we threw it away."
