Auburn Quotes

Auburn 74, UAB 60

Auburn Head Coach Nell Fortner

Opening statement...

"I am excited about the win.  I think anytime you get a win and advance, that's a good thing playing in a tournament.  I am really pleased with that.  We had to get a little rust off, because we hadn't played in two weeks.  I thought we did some really good things in the first half against UAB's zone.  That was hard for them to stop.  We kind of lost a little bit of our momentum in the second half.  We hung in there, and I feel really good about the win."

On Auburn's start in the second half...

"I think we came out and played hard in the second half.  We started feeding off each other and had some pretty nice plays.  The kids got excited, and that's a good thing.  We were really rolling.  I messed with some combinations trying to get some kids some playing time and experience.  We got out of a rhythm.  Experience is more important than rhythm I guess."

On UAB's Carmen Guzman...

"She's a very nice player.  We struggled guarding her really at any level.  That's the first time we have ever played zone for 40 minutes.  We did it basically because of her, because she's such a good penetrator.  We felt like she was the engine that made that team go.  We had to make sure we had our bases covered.  It kind of shut everyone else down, but it didn't stop her."

On allowing only one UAB three-pointer...

"One of ours goals was to give up the two instead of the three.  I was real pleased with that.  They only had one or two uncontested threes today.  We were pretty much on them all day long, as far as that was concerned."

On finding holes in UAB's zone...

"With our zone offense, what we try to do is get in that gap.  We did it today, and (DeWanna) Bonner was effective in knocking those shots down.  I think that's probably why they got out of the zone.  We were hurting them pretty bad in it."

On Virginia Tech...

"They have a 6-6' kid that had a double-double against Western Carolina.  They play in the ACC, and that says a lot about them right there.  They are battled tested.  That's for sure.  They are a man defensive team, but they will mix their defenses up.  They are a tough team."

On having to travel to Virginia Tech...

"This tournament depends on making a little bit of money.  With the lack of crowd, I'm not surprised by that."

On winning 20 games this season...

"That always seems to be a milestone in basketball.  You want to get to 20 wins.  This is the first season this staff has gotten to 20 wins.  That's a really good thing.  I think it says a lot about this team growing up, and doing some good things this year.  I think it speaks volumes of the team."

Sophomore Guard Sherell Hobbs

On the game...

"I had to focus on my shots today because in practice they haven't been falling. I try to focus on the rotation of the ball and getting the ball up. I guess that helped me."

On getting open shots...

"I was surprised about how open I was. It was like they (UAB) were backing off of me. I had a lot of open jumpers. I missed a couple of bunnies, but they were pretty easy shots for the most part."

Sophomore Guard Whitney Boddie

On Sherell Hobbs...

"She started us off right. She hit that big shot to start the game. Her attack mentality always makes it good for us and it opens things up. I think she had a very good night."

On intensity of the game...

"We were excited to be playing in the post season. We haven't played since we lost to South Carolina. We've been practicing hard since then. We just wanted to start the game off right. Coach Fortner talked about how it is more than just a post season game, it is like bragging rights. They (UAB) are one of the top teams in the state. You want to prove that you are elite. It was SEC vs. Conference USA. I think that we did a good job of coming out and playing hard."

UAB Quotes

Head Coach Audra Smith

Opening Statement...

"I want to say that I am extremely proud of my team with how far we are able to advance this year.  We started out the year 0-6, and we could have faltered, given up hope in themselves and us as a staff, but they didn't.  We were able to finish second in our conference with 12 victories, and earn an at-large bid to the WNIT.  I am proud of them for accomplishing that feat, and earning a first round win.  Tonight I feel like we got ourselves in a hole early and couldn't dig our way.  We got the lead down to three, but you just can't dig yourself a deep hole like that.  I have to give Auburn a lot of credit because they came out with a lot of energy and intensity.  They played with a real sense of energy.  This was their first opportunity to be in post season play, and I am sure they were excited, and they showed it by the way they played."

On struggling shooting the ball...

"We depend on three kids to give us quite a bit, that being Diamond Rogers, Britney Jones and Carmen Guzman.  We didn't have as much big support as we have had in previous games, and that was tough.  We had some open looks, and we took a lot of threes.  We take about 20 a game and we took 17 today.  Our team was only able to make one.  For a couple of our kids, their confidence started to falter when those shots weren't falling.  But when we were able to put the ball on the deck and get to the basket, we were able to be more successful.  Our main problem was on the opposite end.  We couldn't get stops on the opposite end.  We allowed their kids to be comfortable and get shots in their comfort zone, especially (Sherell) Hobbs and (Whitney) Boddie.  They aren't three-point shooters, so they are the types of kids who have a really good mid-range game, and we gave that up way too much."
