Auburn vs. Mississippi State
March 3, 2013
Auburn, Ala.
Auburn Arena

Auburn Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy

Opening statement... "We played a great first half. We came out in the second half and acted like we already had the game won. We called a few timeouts to get ourselves situated back again. With every team in the SEC there is always a chance of the team coming back, because they are such good teams. Mississippi State was coming off such a great win against Georgia, so they had the confidence they needed to make a run to get back into the game."

On Blanche Alverson... "Her performance was awesome. What a great senior night to have for Blanche. Anytime we needed a basket and anytime we needed to stop the run, she was right there, and I thought our young ladies did a very great job of knowing that she was hot and tried to find her."

On the senior class... "It's a great senior class, and they work so hard. I said it earlier, but it is tough as a senior to accept a new head coach, because there is nothing you can do about it. You have to stay, and you can't transfer. You have nowhere to go. They did a great job of accepting me as their new head coach and doing everything that I asked them to do."

On the stats... "12-3 at home is awesome. I will take that any day. You can even go back and look at the three losses, and they were losses that we probably shouldn't have had, but I will take the 12 wins any day."

More on Blanche Alverson... "She's just awesome. Blanche being as busy as she is, it was great that the more we asked her to get in the gym and make her shot more consistent, she was always able to do everything that we asked her to."

On being able to play in the SEC tournament... "I'm a very honest coach, and I made sure that they knew that this was a must win game. Unfortunately it was a game that we put ourselves in to have to win. I told them we never want to be in that situation again. I thought they really handled it and went out and played extremely well, especially in the first half under so much pressure."

On how the team played today... "It's always good to go into the SEC tournament on a good note."

On this being a well-played, complete game... "I was very happy for Julie King. She plays so hard and does so much for our team. She's developed into a really good basketball player. We almost wish we she had a few more years and we could keep her here. Even in the mistakes that we made, we didn't put our heads down. We went back out and when we needed to make a play offensively or defensively, we went out and we did it."

Blanche Alverson, Senior, G

On her performance from start to finish and how it felt...

"It was great. It was a great team win, and my teammates really looked for me. When I hit my first couple of shots, I think they all knew I was feeling it a little bit and knew I was in the zone so they kept trying to find me the ball whenever I was open. I owe it all to them for their assists today, and I just knew that if I was the one getting shots, I needed to knock them down because we needed to win this game today."

On if this was a dream playing a game like today in her final game in the Auburn Arena...

"I think on your senior night you definitely want to go out and have a good performance. I was definitely a little anxious before just because I didn't shoot well against Vanderbilt, so I wanted to come out and really have a good complete game. This was the best you could've hoped for."

On the Vanderbilt game...

"It was really disappointing on Thursday. I know that it was a game we all wanted to win and none of us played well. We were really disappointed after that game and really defeated. We didn't have a good practice on Friday, and we knew we had to pick it up. We had a great practice yesterday and came into the game really focused today."

On being a shooter and hitting the first one of the game...

"It's always good to hit your first shot. Knowing that you got it out of the way, you can keep your focus on the game, and when you miss, you have to keep on shooting."

On pulling out this win today and how important it is, going into the SEC Tournament...

"I think going into the tournament, we need to have confidence in ourselves. We've competed with mostly every team in this conference. We've had a tough road schedule, so to play teams that we've lost to, we get to play them on a neutral floor, and we're looking forward to that. This win is just going to roll over, and we've had a great game today, so we're going to take that confidence we've built today and take it over to Atlanta."

On the turn around to get her mind off of the Vanderbilt game...

"To be honest with you, the whole senior night kind of took the attention off of the last game. I was really in my thoughts a lot today, thinking that this was my last game here and that it's been a great four years. I didn't even think about the shooting of the last game, I just wanted to move on. I got in the gym Friday and Saturday and shot so I knew I had worked it out and got back in my shot, so I just came out and played today without even thinking about it."

On knowing how close she was to hitting 200 3-pointers and being next to Alli Smalley in Auburn's history...

"I had no idea. I heard them announce that I was at 197, but I didn't know that number. I think it's kind of cool because me and Alli are such great friends and we had a great relationship when she played here. We always played so well together, and we still keep in touch. I think it's kind of cool that we are such great friends and we're one and two in the books, so she's great company to keep."

On ever scoring 30 in a high school game...

"I didn't. I got 29 in a game so this is my first 30 point game ever."

Najat Ouardad, Senior, G

On how much she was looking for Blanche to get the ball to her...

"I always look for her for basically every possession. I already knew from the jump that she was really hot so every time I caught them I knew Blanche was going to be open. She's such a great shooter, and she makes my job so much easier."

On pulling out this win today and how important it is, going into the SEC Tournament...

"We needed this win, as Coach Flo said, and I feel like we have a lot of confidence now because we played a complete game. We feel like we are very confident to go in Thursday and get the win."

On getting emotional in the pregame ceremony...

"I did cry because people here have been so great to me, and being from overseas, all these girls are like my family. It was just very emotional, and I knew I had to give my all and play my heart out. I'm very pleased with the win."

Mississippi State Head Coach Vic Schaefer

On the game...

"We just weren't ready to play. You don't have to blame anybody, or look any further than me. We came out and we weren't ready to play when the lights came on. We haven't had a couple good days of practice, which is typical of a young, inexperienced and immature team coming off a great win. I give Auburn credit. They really executed. They forced us into 31 turnovers. We obviously struggled against their zone press most of the day. I think that was the key and our inability to guard [Blanche] Alverson in the perimeter. Those were really the biggest disappointments for me. Again, that's my inability in preparing this team, and we've just got to find a way to bounce back."
